Question for you guys

Hey guys,

I'm about to setup my new tank and have a question, I have a bunch of live rock that I dried out in the sun for two weeks.

Should I soak this rock in a vinegar mixture for a few days then all water for a few days? Or do you think the rock will be fine? I plan on seeding the rock with a piece of LR from a friends tank anyways to speed things up. I'm just worried about phosphates leaking out of the rock.

What do you think?

I would:
1. Put it in a bath of muriatic acid (10%) with a pump and heater for a couple of hours.
2. Then do a rinse bath same way.
3. Bath with lanthium chloride. (This gets all the phosphate out of the rock)
4. Rinse bath.
5. Let dry and ready to go.

Where do I get said acids?

muriatic acid is available at lowes/home depot.

Lots of things with Lanthium chloride, Seaklear is most common. Any liquid phosphate additive for aquariums is lanthium chloride.

So my phosphate remover pebbles that are used in my GFO reactor?

you can do that. I think the other is more effective.

Try a local pool supply store for sea klear.

i found that no local pool stores carry it! but i got Kem Tek Phosphate remover for pools and spas, looked it up online and its generally the same thing...havent got the acid yet, the rock is pretty clean, do you think i could get away with not having an acid bath or do you strongly recommend one?

There's lots of dead stuff on the rock. HCl will dissolve it and some of the rock. You could let it sit in SW with heat and circulation for a few weeks. The dead stuff will rot off, yum!, and you could get to a similar result.

Bleach or Vinegar go after the live stuff and kill it. Vinegar does a little of what HCl does but not as fast.

Did anyone mention to be careful with Muriatic Acid? Good gloves, eye protection at a minimum. Handy if you can do this outside with a hose ready to go. Lots of splashes and spills are really helped by washing them down.

There's lots of info on RC about this so I won't repeat the detail.
