Question for zoa experts

Most of my zoas tend to look like they stretch for light and do not grow in a tight short mat like they should. I have tried placing the same zoas at the top of the tank and the bottom with the same results. The zoas seem to be happy, decent coloration, and are growing well. I've read it could be a light issue but I am
running a maxspect razr - not the best light in the world but more than sufficient for zoas, especially at the top of the tank (I was previously running a Hydra 52 with the same issues). Calcium is 500, dkh 8, 0 phosphates and about 5 ppm nitrates. Everything else in the tank seems to be doing fine, although my growth levels could improve.

I would appreciate some advice from the zoa experts out there. TIA!

They look moderately stretched to me. When I had this issue with one of my zoa frags moving it higher solved the issue, don't know what to say given that didn't change anything for you.

Those pics actually depict the same coral - one towards the top of the tank and one sitting on the sand bed. Odd

This is perfectly normal. They are stretching for light true. But it's because the zoas didn't grow themselves far apart enough. If you take a top down look you'll see there are no gaps between the open polyps. My rastas do the same as a colony by when I frag them into 2-3 polyps they get shorter so to speak

Okay, that makes total sense. I can see that each polyp is right up against the other so they really have no choice but to stretch. This begs the question - how to I induce them to grown further apart from each other :mixed:
