I have a question about the polyps at the base of my acros they all have some what died off! They are white at the base why is this? Not enough flow not enough light? The mid section and tips are growning out but the base is white! I dont understand i thought they grew more from the base?

check for red bugs. then check your alk too usually if its an alk problem it shows on the tips. did you just change your media?

This could simply be caused by lack of light. Are any of these bases shaded?

Bad photo it was taken with my phone.

Are you seeing this on a lot of your sps or just a few of them? Also, how long has the base been white like this and have you seen it progress any further up the coral?

Red bugs won't do it qucik, they will do it slow and steady. The red bugs will eat the mucas around the coral, and that irritates to the point where it starts to stress, and then go into RTN . Keep and eye on it for sure what ever it is.

To tell you the truth it just seems to happen on the larger ones. my ora green birdsnest is perfectly fine my green bali is just starting to get it a little bit I do have a small tri color that has a bit going on but i think its because it had been nocked over for a couple days and wasn't getting the best light. The polyp extension is still really good though.

If your polyp extension is good then I doubt the problem is red bugs. Do you monitor your ALK on a regular basis? If so, does it swing much?

My alk usually doesn't swing. If anything i have let it drop down a bit due to being on vacation and out on the road for buisness. it has dropped from about 11dkh to about 9 dkh but this is over a two and a half week time spand. I just tested my params before I got on rc and my ph alk and cal is what I usually keep it at. I do not have a mag test kit or i would have checked it.

It is possible that the drop in alk is your problem. I would also check to make sure you don't have any bite marks on the coral. If you have bite marks then that's another story. :)
