question on maxi mods

for a 90 gallon tank, would it be too much flow to have one medium flow on each side but on a wave maker so only one side was on at a time? I'm thinking this is the way I want to go. I'll be keeping all corals from shrooms to sps. I only have one sps right now but want to get more in the future.

I would guess the answer to be that the extra torque required to get the maxi-mods spinning again would be very damaging over short on-and-off cycles. It takes a lot more torque than the maxi-jet was designed to handle consistently to get them spinning.

why won't maxi-mods work on a wavemaker?

Don't quote me on this but it's something that has to do with the start and stopping of the pump constantly that the MJ PH's don't like and for that reason won't work with a wavemaker.

No, the MJs stock are fine for a wavemaker. The problem comes when you start to mod them. The stock one has no directional stopper, and the way the magnetic motor works, it can spin the rotor one way or another, more or less randomly. That's why cutting off the directional spout is such a nice mod when you use MJs with wavemakers, because it randomly chooses one direction or the other (45 degrees from straight) to shoot out the water. The problem is when you start putting a prop on the other end of it. That is why it's so important to put the directional stop on the MJ mod when you do it, so it doesn't spin backwards on those restarts, because then it would be a huge vacuum on one side of the tank and might eat some fish and stuff. The prop causes stress from the torque like I said before, as well as on that stopper, constantly clinking back and forth every time it restarts in the wrong direction.

Keith, the short answer is that the maxijets mods were not designed with the on/off in mind but they will work on a wavemaker, however, every time they are turned on you will hear some annoying rattling noise until the propeller gets in position. Most likely over time they will stop working due to the wear of parts.

thank you guys. sounds like I'll just stick to the same way I have it set up! or maybe even loose them all together and set up a...dang it I can't think of what its called...LOL oh closed loop! Long day and I still have a 3 hour lecture class to sit through!

I've got 2 1200 mods in my 72 gal. They work great -amazing flow! But i also had the problem of them making noise when they start up due to the anti-reversing knob. Hadn't thought about cutting it off and letting them spin either way. But your right it would slice-o-matic any fish that came thru the front - but I can put some egg-crate on it to prevent that. I have a wavemaker but I stop using it because of all the issues with starting and stopping and the noise of the anti-reverse knob. Thanks for the tip!

I put two modded MJ'ts on either end of my 50g and put them on seperate timers, they run for an hour, off for an hour, alternating and have been fine for several months. No rattling, no excessive wear etc..

B patient- they are going to suffer over time. DIY parts are going to break such as the prop. As single constant unidirectional flow - they are as good and even beter IMO than the Tunzes, but require some maintenance and for your info I've used both.

That is interesting, which mod kit do you have on those MJ's? the reason why I ask is because I just saw my friends tank last night and he had to turn off his MJmods to feed the tank and when they wouldnt go back on, he literaly had to almost take it apart to get it going again.
I know there was three companies making this mods a few months back probably more now.
