Question on mushrooms and lighting

We have several different types of mushrooms and colors. We've always used power compacts. We're thinking about changing over to metal halides. Will doing this make the colors of our mushrooms better? Or would it not have that much impact on the colors ?

You will definately want to aclimate them to the new lighting over a period of time. Most shrooms like med to low light. If they get too much light they will close up and also bleach out. By the way, that is the most mushrooms I have seen in 1 tank. Nice Anenome also.

I agree with racing. With the mushrooms you have in that tank it would probably be more detrimental to them than helpful, particularly the discosomas at the top. You'd pretty much fry them with MHs I think.

That's the second most shrooms I've seen in a tank. Very impressive. How old is the tank?

I agree...at very least they're not going to open as much under MH. I think you're much better off with the PC's....some extra blue light (or moonlights) would be a good way to bring out some extra colors for your enjoyment....

Thanks everyone for the replys.. the tank was setup 3 years ago. Mushrooms multiply in this tank like crazy....we want to start growning some other types of coral, however with all the mushrooms and colors, we think its beautiful, and different. I guess we would just need to start another tank to grow the different types of corals, and add the MH lights on that one.

I agree with your last message Mark. Start another tank. Leave this one alone. Changing over to metal halides on a beautiful shroom tank like yours is the same as asking a fine red head to lay out on the beach all day in a bikini with no protection.

My questions to you is HOW did you get them to multiply in your tank that fast? How many did you start off with?
Im just simply amazed on how BEAUTIFUL your tank is with shrooms. It makes me want to change my ideas and go with shrooms ( hardy devils).
