question on types of LPS

I confess, I'm really confused abut some of these LPS. Encrusting, plating, etc...I've had a hard time finding some detailed info on these that go into more than lighting and water param requirements. Any good links to a LPS noob page? I have random questions, like how do you know how to mount a monti frag? They grow out, up, encrusting...whats the best direction/way to mount? How does something start out as encrusting and then start to plate, and how do you tell what kind it is? Specifically, I'm looking for details on montis/digitata/favia/chalice...

Thats actually a really broad question, as even within one group there can be a huge difference between species. For example, you mentioned Montipora- there are big differences between the growth patterns of M. digitata and M. capricornis, let alone the other 70+ recognized species. To make matters worth, conditions vary from tank to tank, and that can completely change the growth pattern of many corals- Acropora are infamous for this.

There arent any good online guides that Im aware of that say "X coral will look like Y under Z conditions". There are a few books out there that make good references for those things- my favorite would probably be Aquarium Corals by Eric Borneman. Otherwise, if you see a coral youre interested in, but are unsure of its requirements and habits, post up on RC to get answers from people who have the experience. Its really just a matter of slowly familiarizing yourself with things as you go along.

i agree about the book it has lots of coral requiremants in there,don't get frustrated we all started this way,also do some searches on rc good luck
