I have a 75 gallon quarantine tank with 1 flame angle in it. The tank and flame angel have been in hyposalinity mode for almost a week now. I need to acclimate a new small purple tang I am inheriting into the Q tank. The tang has been kept in a tank with a specific gravity of 1.022.

My questions are: Does anyone have any suggestions on how long I should take to acclimate the tang from 1.022 to 1.009 and how should I go about doing it? Should I leave him in the transport bag and acclimate from the bag?

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

TIA,
Veronica

It should take 2 days to get it down to 1.009. Not an easy task in your situation. Possibly a 5 gallon bucket, a small heater, and a small powerhead using the drip method.

If you have the space, a 10 gallon tank at Walmart is $10 and would give the fish alittle more swimming room with Slider162's suggestions of the heater and powerhead. I think that using existing tank water should allow you to get the tang in some stable water and give you the time to reduce the SG.

Acclimating fish to a low salinity quickly is usually not a problem, provided the pH and temperature are in line. Raising the salinity again is another thing. Raise it slowly, a couple of points a day.

Thanks all. I setup a 10 gallon, as suggested, with a cheap biofilter and put pvc, heater, airstone & powerhead in it and matched the parameters of the water the tang came from. He really is a beautiful little fish. I'll lower the salinity over a couple of days in the 10 gallon then acclimate him to the 75 gallon Qtank with hypo after he is doing well in the 10. The 75's biofilter is a lot more stable and one less tank to deal with is better for me!!! : )

Thanks for the advice about brining the salinity back up slooooowly. I was thinking I'd just replace evaporated water with regular salinity water instead of fresh water to get it back up to 1.025 when the hypo is finsihed. I only get about 48 ounces of evap a day in the 75.
