question

major difference,a must have IMO . you can do it without but its like going on a 1000 mile trip with bald tires and knowing it if you do it without unless you do some real advanced techniques to clean your water . i wouldn't try it without one ,and get a good one too .

after you pull a cup or two of jet black toxic slime out of your tank every couple of days, you'll ask yourself how THAT was in there in the first place... and how the tank could NOT be better with it out of the water column. It is vile smelling and slimey...

I noticed an INSTANT difference... within a day, or so.

on a 75, i wouldn't run without. On a small tank, you can go without, as its much easier to stay on top of water changes.
what is your budget?
there is a good skimmer thread in the filtration section.

I have a 75 gallon and really like my Marineland 100 but there are others that are better and others that are worse. The protein skimmer is one of the best investments in saltwater.

for an inexpensive skimmer i like the ASMs as they function very well but are somewhat cheaply built . its quality on craftsmanship is out weighed by its performance as far as bang for the buck goes .i have three and they perform great ,i also have a couple different brands and they are so much better built but they don't function any better IMO.

75 salt hit the nail on the head ! the skimmer IMO is the most important tool in an aquarium . the only thing more important would be your lights and that would be if you were a sps dominated tank . just my opinion ?
