Questions about ich, hyposalinity, and other things.

Please Help, I had a Flame Angel dye today and I think it was from Ich. The only other fish that shows it is the Royal Gramma, he has some white spots and will from time to time rub himself against the live rock. What should I do, I dont have a QT set up, buy hopefully by tomarrow I will. Is there anything else I can do, I have been soaking my food in garlic for the past week or so. Also can you please tell me how Hyposalinity works. Thanks, I sure hope the Royal Gramma makes it through the night!

I woke up this morning and didnt see any dead fish, but the Royal Gramma does sleep in the rocks. Ive got a question, can I use distilled water instead of RO/DI for the hyposalinity, and also would it be ok if I used a float hydrometer instead of the refractometer, I dont have enough money or time. When I get home today Im going to mix about 18gal in a 20gal L tank, do a 5gal water change so I can have some of my tank water in the QT. Then I will start the Hyposalinity from this site http://www.petsforum.com/personal/t...posalinity.html
Thanks, please respond soon!

I got home today and the Royal Gramma was alive, yay. I got some distilled water and am going to start the QT, Ill mix it all the the QT then take 5gal of it and swap it with water in my display tank. I also got a float hydrometer. Then the hyposalinity, I do the water change at 6:00 today then try to move all the fish in at the same time, then tomorrow at 6:00, take 1/5 of the water out and replace it with distilled, then at at 6:00pm, and so on until I have it at 1.009. Is this Okay?

Controlling the salinity during a hyposalinity treatment is very critical to success or failure. Do not use a hydrometer. Use a refractometer to measure salinity. They cost $40 or less. Use salinity not specific gravity. The explanation of the difference is given in this link:

The salinity of 11ppt would be about 1.008 sp. gr.

Distilled water is a good alternative to RO/DI.

You can lower the salinity down to 11ppt over a two-day period. Lowering it quickly is not a problem to the fish. Raising the salinity, when the time comes, must proceed very slowly -- no more than 0.004 sp. gravity units per day.

I am unable to get a web page from the link you put in your previous post. Just keep diluting the saltwater until you reach 11ppt (or 12ppt).

The greatest challenge will be to control the pH of the water at that dilution. Check pH two or three times a day and adjust the pH to keep it as steady as you can at about 8.1 to 8.2

I bought a test kit today and it contains pH, I tested my water in my display and it is about 8.2-8.3. What if it does drop when I am doing hyposalinity? How do I get it back up. And Im going to do the 5gal water swap as soon as the new water gets up to 79SIZE=1]o[/SIZE]. Should I try to get the Royal Gramma to the QT right as I am done, or when should I?
