questions BEFORE I buy RBTA

Hey everyone. Over the last couple of weeks, I have been looking at RBTA's and have contemplated getting one. The last couple of days I have been watching one at the LFS, but it hasn't sold yet.......so, I'm thinking of buying it. I wanted to ask you guys what you thought of this guy. The anemone is about 7in across, and is brown with flourescent pink tips. The tentacles are different sizes and different diameters. It appears healthy, no part is shrivled or 'deflated'. There is a green sheen across the top of the body however, which is noticeable on the tentacles a bit, as well. Oh, and its hosting a crab of some sort. I don't really know much about these guys, so I thought I would ask the experts if what I described seemed ok before I made a large purchase. Oh, by the way, I have 250 DE 14k Phoenix MH and pc's for lighting. Thanks for any help or suggestions!

It sounds like it's in decent shape, although I'm not expert :)
I've had a H. crispa for a couple years, and a little over 3 weeks ago got a RBTA :) It's beautiful!

The FAQ (clowns/anemone) near the top of the forum has some good info, and a good bta specific site is

Good luck!

No RBTA I have seen was actually red. The one I'm looking at is (light) brown, but the very bright, fluorescent pink tips run about 1/3 the length of the tentacle. I'm pretty sure its a RBTA. I wish I had a pic, but I don't carry a camera around with me. If I can find a picture that resembles the coloring of the one I've seen, then I'll post it.

you can tell my white ballance was way off and the flash bled it but this is one of a few in the TCMAS that are a deep red color.

Even that anemone is not true red. Think fire engine. When someone says red thats what I think anyways. Either way, I don't want to argue, I know that your trying to help. You see how the red fades to a darker color near the foot (body? I'm not sure what you call it) The anemone that I was looking at is colored very similar to that, except the red fades to a darker shade, almost a brown close to (and on) the base. The colors are irridescent (sp?) though.

The pic above is a beautiful RBTA, rose, red, or what ever you want to call it. There are many different variations of this color, and it is still refered to as RBTA. There are also GBTA (green) also with different shades, and then there are brownish ones. The one pictured above looks very healthy.

Alright. I have been doing a little reasearch, so I have a fairly good idea what a healthy RBTA looks like. However, I was reading a thread by someone who was taking pictures of his RBTA, and he said " and look, no green". I'm not sure what he meant by this and the thread was too old to expect a reply to my question. He made it sound as though green on a RBTA was bad. I noticed a bit of fluorescent green on the body of the anemone that I'm looking at, and this just made me want to ask the question.

There are also RBTAs with green on them, it doesn't mean they are unhealthy. They are perfectly fine. Color is all about personal choice unless it is white, which is a unhealthy BTA, or a dyed BTA, which is another problem.

very helpful with lots of pics.

In an older thread it was probably a reference to the "chinese" RBTAs that flooded the market a while ago, which were notorious for losing their red coloration and becoming a drab brown. These anemones had green oral disks. There are recent green/rose BTAs that appear to be similar in color but don't fade.

Ah, I see. I had done a search trying to find more on the "green" that had been referenced in a thread I read earlier, but to no avail. Thanks for the explanation Slakker.
