Questions on Chaeto

Hi All - I recently added a HOB fuge to my 38-gallon tank and dropped a softball sized ball of chaeto into it. Anyone know how long it takes before starting to help with nitrate reduction? Just wondering. I'm not in any rush, was just curious. Also, how much chaeto would people suggest for this size tank? One ball enough? Thanks.

Your tank is a year old and you are having nitrate issues? I wouldn't rely on the chaeto to fix that, i'd figure out what's causing the issue in the first place. That one ball with good lighting and nutrients will fill up all of the space you give it. You will more than likely be wondering in the future how small of a ball can you cut it back to for it to remain viable. I pare my down to softball size every month and a half or so from soccer ball size.

I do not have a DSB, so I am not getting the full last step of nitrate to nitrogen conversion. While I have about 65 lbs of live rock, it still doesn't have that anaerobic punch that a DSB would. My nitrates hover between 5 and 10 with regular water changes, so not a high nitrate content, but enough to add the fuge to take care of the rest. There is a small DSB in the fuge though, so that will start to help as well once that is established.
