I do not own one, but to the best of my knowledge they are similar in function to the other needlewheel skimmers like the ASM G series. The pump that drives them is a Sedra with the needlewheel impeller and venturi inlet. They are designed for insump use only.
That said, if you wanted to modify the skimmer for external use you would need to modify how either the pump or the skimmer itself draws water. You could just leave the pump in sump and connect the output to the skimmer external, but that would kill your bubble production (and thus your performance). Best way to run a needlewheel type skimmer external would be to convert it to re-circulating and feed it directly from one of your drains. The drain flows water into the skimmer, the recirculating pump provides the tiny bubbles and you can drain from the skimmer back into your sump. There is a mod kit for the ASMs on ASMSkimmer.com for the recirc and drain feed.
If modification is not your thing, you would be better served with an external beckett type like the MRC or PM skimmers designed to run external.
