im thinking of geting a ewuroreef for one of my tanks couple questions i need answered i couldnt figure out from thier onlkine manual can i use the output to directly return to my tank?the only models they make that i could find are in sump do they make a out of sump or has anyone ever modifed one to work out of sump?anyone using thm happy or unhappy with them?

I do not own one, but to the best of my knowledge they are similar in function to the other needlewheel skimmers like the ASM G series. The pump that drives them is a Sedra with the needlewheel impeller and venturi inlet. They are designed for insump use only.

That said, if you wanted to modify the skimmer for external use you would need to modify how either the pump or the skimmer itself draws water. You could just leave the pump in sump and connect the output to the skimmer external, but that would kill your bubble production (and thus your performance). Best way to run a needlewheel type skimmer external would be to convert it to re-circulating and feed it directly from one of your drains. The drain flows water into the skimmer, the recirculating pump provides the tiny bubbles and you can drain from the skimmer back into your sump. There is a mod kit for the ASMs on ASMSkimmer.com for the recirc and drain feed.

If modification is not your thing, you would be better served with an external beckett type like the MRC or PM skimmers designed to run external.

In order to drain into the tank, the skimmer would have to be above the water level in the tank. This would force you to pump water up to the skimmer - either using the needlewheel pump (at a significant loss or performance if any at all) or by converting it to recirc and using another pump to feed the skimmer.

Neither is very functional nor cost effective.

Aside from that, why do you want the skimmer to drain back into the tank and not the sump? IMO all you will do is drain bubbles directly from the skimmer into the display.

If you have a sump and want to use a ER skimmer, your best performance will be using it in sump. If the skimmer must be external - look toward some of the beckett skimmers available on the market. Or just get a hang on tank type (CPR Backpack, Deltec ($$$) or some other brand) and run with that.

im trying to figure a way to make room for it because i have 2 pumps in that section of the sump already so not sure if the euroreef would fit matbe i need to add more sump space
