I have seen this before but forgot the name and info.
It is attached to the base of a coral I just got in.
Good/bad?

Should I prune or let my Purple Tang go at it?

Thanks,
Sean

Hey Sean,

I reckon that is Padina sp.. I'm not sure if your tang will like it or not. I believe that is the only genus of brown algae that is calcifying thoguh it clearly isn't very heavily calcified. I think it has practically no potential for becomming a problem algae. I had some in my smaller reef when it was younger but it just kind of went away.

Thanks Kevin.

I think I am going toprune it off the best I can.
The Tang cleaned off the whole rock but left this algae like you said.

Yes, that's Padina, and it's actually a harmless algae. It's a moderately fast grower, and won't become a nuisance.

Good safe Phosphate and mitrate exporter....
