quick black ich id needed

I got a lieutenant tang that I acquired 4 days ago and made the mistake of adding him to my display tank without a QT. After 3 days I noticed he has marine ich, but also has some black dots on his body that are in one spot one day and in different places the next. So I'm trying to id if he has black ich or just scuffs from scatching.


Does black ich protrude from the skin like regular ich?


Right now they look like someone took a fine tip sharpie and dotted him. There's no bumps from the black dots.

Thanks for the links.

If the black dots are a reaction of the skin to the worms, then does that mean it doesn't protrude from the skin like marine ich and the only visual indication is only the black discoloration?

I took him out last night as a precaution and put him in a 30 gallon QT. If the appearance is only the black dots, then the fish probably has the black ich. I'll start treatment with Formallin3 tonight.

He was in the main tank for ~ about 4 days. When I first got him I didn't notice any black dots on him. If the parasite stays on the fish for ~6 days and falls off, is it possible that I was able to take him out before they dropped off and for their eggs to develop? Or do you think the parasites could be at different stages in the life cycle, and there's probably eggs on the substrate already?

Maybe ... but black isn't all that lethal and easy to treat .. many just give a series of FW dips.

Hopefully. I'd like to be able to either do the formalin treatment or FW dips. Keep him in QT for 2 weeks and then reintroduce him to the tank, if the parasites haven't dropped into the sand.

I guess I'll find out since I have other fish in the tank and if they don't get it within the 2 weeks. Then I may have gotten lucky and got him out in time.

pretty sure my yellow tang has ich.....bought a goby a few weeks ago should have qt him...but didnt...anyway...has anyone had any success with a pepper base product like Kent RX-P?
apparently its safe for most invertabrates (aside from sea urchins and apples etc )I will be putting my urchins and my conchs in qt while i treat my little guy)

any feed back on the product would be helpful !!

Thanks to Kevin 2000 for the link to the great pictures of diseased fish. Does anyone have a link to a good pic of a fish with marine velvet? It wasn't in this group of pics. I am wondering whether several fish that I thought had marine velvet actually had brooklynella. If you have any hints on distinguishing the two, I would welcome them. Thanks, Lynn

Well after using Kent RX-P for the 13 days...my tang died from secondary infections, I ended up giving him numerous fresh water dips to help, but it seemed to me that Kent RX-P is crap,on the 11th day after talking to the supplier, they said I should continue the process because some parasites are very hardy. anyway...if I ever find myself battling parasites, I will NOT use any sort of pepper treatment...will go old school next time.

Freshwater dips are ALL you need to treat this. I speak from experience. I would expose my fish to any meds. I did not have too.
