Quick Emperor 400 question.

How is this thing supposed to run? I have all the right parts. The water that is getting shot out is the water straight from the aquarium? The boxes that hold the water in the back are not staying full. Should they? This filter was given to me so I don't have the box. I had to buy the filters and bio wheels tonight and I dont want to open them until I know this thing is working right.

Thanks in advance.

In the middle on the top of the Emp 400 there should be a gray tab. It may be a different color on new/older models. Make sure it is pulled all the way up... that will draw the max amount of water. That's the first thing I always check when I notice it is not running well.

The spray bars are not what most of the Emperors flow comes from. I think they are intended to spray into the filter, but they make lots of noise that way. I always turned them facing the shield tat hangs down on the front to keep the thing quiet. BTW, most people on here will also tell you NOT to use the bio-wheels because they can start to produce nitrates.

So it will be ok with just a 2 filters? I just added my sand and water tonight and someone gave me this filter free so Im just using it until I have the time to get my sump running.

BTW, I dont have a top on the filter.

Is the water that comes from the spray bars straight from the tank or does the water come from the tank into the back boxes and then into the spray bars?

I hear ya. I have a bunch of friends that go to USuC. Looks like in-state baseball is gonna be a fight this year.

BTW, Do you know if Maxi Jet cords are fully submersible?

hahaha.... i just got it...... u suck.....

yes, they are submersible, i mean, as long as the pumps are submersible then the cords will be.... except not the end you plug into the wall......:spin1:

The spray-bars are meant to keep the bio wheel rotating, if you don't put the bio-wheels in (and you shouldn't) then just aim the spray bars any direction you wan't. which ever is quietest. I do hope there is water coming out of the filter other then the spray bars, as mentioned above they should not be the only water going into the tank

I have a emporer 400 on my tank with the bio wheels running... so your saying that I should take them off because the wheels will produce nitrates... ???

There is a little "cap" at the bottom of the manifold housing where the impeller sits. That is what diverts some of the water flow into the spraybars. If you remove that, this should alleviate some of the pressure into the spraybars and give you more flow through the filter pads (and make it more quiet if you have the wheels removed).

Good to know spline I will do that if I ever turn my filter back on, im running it off for now to see if it helps with my slightly high nitrates 15ppm, if not I willprobably turn it back on. as for your question bjonesjr1, I would say that if your Nitrates are not high and the bio-wheels are working for you leave it alone. If your nitrates are high it might help to remove the bio-wheels, remove one, and then remove the other bout a week later, same principle as removing bio-balls slowly.
