Quick help please!

I brought a floating thermometer and ave it to my girlfriend (going back to work from lunch) without realizing it was cracked and the mercury leaked out and killed off everything in my tank, what steps do i take to clean all the filters rock sand etc? The pet store will pay costs for my loss, but rather then buy everything new what can I do to clean? I heard boiling the rock in vinegar will help?

Correction sorry, there was no mercury after memory the liquid was red so it would have been alcohol, either way i was to late to save anything, what are the correct methods for rock treatment

First thing I would do is do a really big water change and put in a poly filter. How big is your tank?
