Quick QT Question

Setting up my QT tonight. The tank I'm using has been emty for a couple of months and has about an inch of dry sand in it.

Does it HAVE to be removed? Not that it would be too difficult or anything, I just figure if it's gonna be set up for the next couple of months with livestock, why remove it? It will be trashed after first qt usage.

Seeding the tank with a media bag of ceramic media I put in my sump three weeks ago specifically for qt usage. It will be also be trashed after QT. It will be in a canister. Also a few pieces of sump live rock that will permanently relagated to QTusage.

Anyways, Remove sand, or no?

I assume you are not getting a fish that needs a sand bed like some wrasse's. If so I would personally remove it. BB helps to pull out excess food and detritus.

When I have wrasses in the QT I usually add a small bowl of sand for them to burrow into and keep the rest of the tank bare bottom.

No problems there. We're all here to learn!

FWIW I'm using a 20 for my current QT and it is going to be for a pair of clowns.

I've also got a 40b sitting in the garage waiting for one of these days when I buy a tang or other roaming fish to not be too uncomfortable while in QT. I'd love to have another 6' long tank just for that, but then again, no way, lol.

since on topic what would be a minimum size QT tank? sorry to ask this on your thread Jscwerve

It really depends upon the fish. A 20 gallon tank is good for the majority of the fish, but if you get a larger open water fish like a big tang a 40 gallon tank will be less stressful to the fish.

All ready to go! Except for having to clean a few pvc fittings to drop in. Bare bottom as per recommended.
