When he's small he'd be OK but he'll need a lot more swimming room when he grows up. I'd say no IMO.

there is a small one at the LFS i was looking at i was going to keep it till it got to big then i was going to move it to my uncles 500gal

Make sure the fish is feeding and flawless. They are ich magnets. My rule for tangs is not to buy one unless I have a correctly sized UV or quarantine tank. Definitely not a fish for beginners due to being so susceptible to parasites IMO.
