I would imagine they would only take in what they want. But you can definitely overfeed the tank if you do not find a way to be rid of the excess food and waste that will come of it.
Most corals get the nutrition they need from their relationship with light so the other feeding is like a treat and does help they grow faster. Too much and you are creating an algae problem in your tank. The exception is NPS corals which require feeding very frequently or they will die. These are NOT beginner coral.
