quick question??

I think his nitrates are up cuz he is mini cycling after adding a fish or three. 20-30 is not bad. When I first set up my 125, my nitrate was off the scale and turned orange without even letting the testtube settle. Kev, you could look at getting some Siporax beads to help host more bacteria for bio filtration. I don't think he can add enough macros to reduce his nitrates, not enough space even with a fuge.
 
3 fish in a 12? That's the kind of stuff we need to know Kevin... A bit of a bio-load there bud, I only had the Harliquins in my setup and that was just a hair too much of a bio-load for my tank. What kind of fish do you have in there? Any chance of removing 1 or even 2?
 
alright i have a 6 gal tank......CAD lights tank.......with basic 3 stage filteration system....with chemi-pure going now and fliter floss......i have LR under the chemi-pure at the bottom of the sump for extra fliter.....and probably like 5 to 6 lbs of LR in the actually visual part of the tank.......so im guessing 6 to 7 lbs of LR in the WHOLE tank....

anything else??
 
I used to keep three fish in my ten gallon eclipse without a skimmer, I just did a 50% water change weekly. I never had any problems with elevated nitrates. I also had about 800 gallons per hour flow which kept the detritus from settling into the rock.

correct.....i had 0 trates right before i put him in.......now i feed him everyday a few pellets and ill give him a few shrimp every once in awhile.....
 
For now, I'd recommend keeping up with the water changes and allow the cycle to complete, the nitrates should fall a bit on their own.

Back to your original question on a 12, I'd bypass the refugium (not enough return on investment) and if you plan on having more than a pair of fish, I'd recommend the sapphire skimmer. Skimmers on nano's can be avoided by frequent water changes, but adding a nano skimmer would allow you to lack on the WC's instead...
 
No pain at all bro, good questions and I'm sure you know there are lots of ways to keep a reef. :D This is only our suggestions, there are plenty of great ways out there and ultimately it's your choice. Just don't put a tang in there. LOL!

kev if you wanted to you could do that Aquaclear 70 mod into a refugium like i plan on doing on mine. Its an easy mod and all you need is a light. it ends up being a hob refugium.....up to you though. Also i dont think you would need a skimmer unless you want alot of fish. But idk skimmers are a weird subject because some people say that corals benifit from the stuff that they pull out and others swear that they are the reason their tanks are as good as they are so. But yea i just want to keep up with water changes and not worry about a skimmer!

Ditto, the AC would be a great and easy HOB refugium. As for the skimmer the different opinions are dependant on what livestock they have. I personally believe in skimming the crap out of your tank if you want SPS, while I wouldn't skim at all if I wanted LPS and softies. Here's a link to a DIY retro of an AC into Refugium:
