Quick question...

I posted the following in the Reef Discussion forum, but after 50+ views, it seems that no one can answer my question. I thought maybe someone here could help...


So, I know that mantis shrimp and pistol shrimp make the infamous "popping" sound, but can a gorilla crab make the same sound? Or if you hear it is it guaranteed that it is either a mantis or pistol?

If you haven't guessed yet, I am hearing a frequent popping in my tank. I got some TBS rock about a month ago so I know its really possible that its a mantis, but I haven't seen a single sign of one. I do know that I have the King Kong of gorilla crabs, though, who has managed to outsmart me thusfar. Just wondering if he could be the culprit of the noise I am hearing.

Nope. Unless they are banging their huge claws on something but I seriously doubt it. I have a gorilla crab thats about the size of a quarter that keeps evading me and I dont think he makes any noises. Remember pistol shrimp and mantis can hide in very very small cracks and crevices. I saw that one guy never knew he had one until he cracked a piece of lr apart and out he came.

this may not be 100% sure but it seems that pistol shrimp just kinda pop at random but mantis seem to do it in threes.

I have a pistol that I have seen 2 or three times in about 6 years.
but I can hear him from 15 feet away at night

when I first got my rock 6-7 years back I had a few mantis and they always seemed to go "Pop Pop Pop" when I heard them.

when I did see my pistol he is not very big, lotsa pop sound from a small package
