Hey everyone, I really am interested in keeping a mantis. Right now I have a 38 gallon and a 10 gallon tank. The 38 gallon is up and running and has been for like 5 or 6 months. I was planning on making it a reef tank but since I am a college student and we are usually poor, I am thinking about running it as a nice nice mantius tank. There is about 30-35 pounds of live rock with fine white sand. Basically, the beginnings of a reef tank. Right now I only have a coral banded shrimp and a purple linkia starfish in there along with about 10 turbo snails and blue-legs hermits. I was wonder what you all would think about what I should do. The 10 gallon is not set up. I know I would have to let it cycle first before I put anything in it. What do you all think? By the way, if I do put a mantis in the 38 gallon, do you think it could house a nice size smasher without worrying about the glass breaking? Or could I kepp 2 mantis in this size of a tank. Thanks for your comments and replies.

Yes you could keep a nice size smasher in your 38 gallon, but even a 5-6" mantis would not be that veiwable in that tank considering that it would hide most of the time, I'd probably continue your plans on making it a reef, just peice it together slowly. Im all for the ten gallon mantis tank though (its what I have two of) and if your worried about cycling just use sand and rock from your 38. Oh and on the subject of two mantis is the 38, I wouldnt do it unless you are alright with one eventually killing off the other. You can do a search on glass breaking (which coincidentaly there are many threads here on that) but I think you'll find its rare but is more likely when keeping certain species (like the peacock, or G. chiragra when they get bigger).

Thanks for the replies. Obviously I would take out all living things in the 38 if i were to put a mantis in there. Maybe just leave a few snails for it. I'll keep you all posted. Thanks.
