Quick tips before FFM please

Hey everyone. This weekend will be awesome and I can't wait for the FFM! I will be purchasing my first corals ever. Do all corals need to be fed? Like zoas and hammers and frogspawns. All the "easier" corals. Trying to see how good I do but looking for corals that don't need spot feeding all the time and will just eat as something floats by or don't need food at all and live off lighting. Thanks again to everyone who has helped me get this far and answering all my questions.

The ones you listed do not need to be spot fed, if you feed your tank you're feeding your corals. Do corals benefit from specific spot feeding, yes they do, but do they need it, no.

Only certain corals require spot feeding.

Awesome thank you. And I'm thinking 12 hr of light is the light cycle for any corals?

it depends on the light...12 hours for LED ramp up and ramp down is fine...but for T5's or MH it may be excessive...but thats just me...

A lot of folks over light their tanks IMO. The corals will only photosynthesize to a certain point, anything after that is a waste of light. In the open reef, they only get up to 6 hours tops, usually less of direct full light. Do some research outside of just asking here on this site, and you will learn a ton about how real reefs really work and thrive. A lot of the things we do, are over done.

I am donating some frogspawn and hammer to the club tank ,Grab em quick at the ffm, great start and easy maintenance. On a 8 hour up and down led system. Very hard to kill. Be sure your parameters are stable though first. I would recommend only a couple lps , zoas, palys

+1 A lot of things we do, are over done.

I am REALLY starting to see how true that is!:spin3:

Hey Famos if this is your first event you should bring a insulated cooler of some type and some pocket hand warmers that you can activate and keep your new purchases warm inside your cooler. Every time I go to these events I find my cooler gets packed full.:0) so plan ahead. You will see that almost everyone has a cooler. I prefer the soft sided cooler. Get ready to be amazed. Kid in a candy store feeling!

Stop by and talk to one of the club guys and chat about your tank. The often overlooked thing about the FFM is the volume of experience that you have all in one place. You have literally thousands of years reefing experience all in one spot for that day.
If you are looking for some nice, inexpensive, hardy corals, stop by and chat with me. I have a bunch of stuff that we grow at the school which has been taken care of by students for years. If it has survived the things my kids do to them, it can live in your tank...
My overall advice- walk, talk, enjoy!
