QuietOne 3000 opinions...?

I know that there have been some poor reviews on QuietOne pumps, particuarly in regard to not restarting when there's been a power outage. But I'm wondering if that might have to do more with using them as return pumps.

Has anyone tried them for closed-loops? Do they have the same issues with restarting in CL's as when they're return pumps? Any issues using them externally?

I was going to trade a Mag 5 for it. I'm not too impressed with my other Mag 5, being that it's a bit noisy and also has restart issues. I figure it could be a wash, and if it does work well the QO3000 moves more water.

I used a 4000 on a closed loop externally and it did have restart problems from day one. I was able to help it a little by smoothing out the rough plastic casting on the impeller magnet which seemed to accumulate calcium build up rapidly and cause it to bind. This did not cure the problem but it extended the time between cleanings. The pump was moderately quiet but ran so hot I could not keep my hand on it. In just over a years use it burned up and electrified my reef which was discovered when my chiller ran non stop for a day or two for no apparent reason. The chiller still could not keep up and when I stuck a volt meter in the water it was pretty high, I don't remember the exact voltage but it got my attention when I stuck my hands in it.

I will not own another QO. I much prefer Ocean Runners, I have three 3500s and a 2700 on my skimmer and all are far superior pumps. my other option would be Eheim but they are pretty proud of them and in my testing I found them to be less energy efficient gallon for gallon.

I have a QuietOne 3000 as my return pump without any issue, whatsoever. It is quiet, as it's name implies and I have it dialed down via a valve in the return plumbing... So for me, a positive review.

Did you run yours externally or submerged? I've heard mixed reviews mostly that they run very hot externally and tend to burn out fairly quickly.

I had a 4000 run externally and a 3000 for the return and would agree with AZDesertRat. The return lasted a little more than a year but was iffy on the restart and near the end would not restart at all even after a through cleaning. The 4000 ran hot externally and would seize up every few days after about 6 months. I was so frustrated that I replaced it with a Pan World 50PX-X. Also, the ceramic shaft is easy to break and expensive. I went with the Eheim for a return pump. I gave the QO’s away as I didn’t feel right selling them and would not recommend them.

The running temperature will be the same internally or externally. Submersibles like that have internal water jackets or passages around the motor windings so the tank water cools the pump either way, not so much the air. If it runs hot externally it will add the same amount of heat to the tank internally.
That is something I forgot to mention earlier, once I switched pumps my tank did run cooler too, I was able to reduce my fan running times to only when the lights were on.

I have had a quiet one 3000 running submerged as my return pump for two years. No problems whatsoever. I am running a Mag7 for my skimmer and it is noisy and has restart problems. I plan to replace it with a quiet one 4000.

Hmmm.... you guys are starting to make me think I should avoid these pumps... for external use, anyway. Thanks for the feedback. :) It's much-appreciated!

I run my 3000 submerged as a return, have had no problems, and I have had no issue with restart whatsoever.

My QuietOne is submerged. I would like to also add that I purchased it used here on RC, in great condition. So, it has been running for I'm guessing near a year (combined).

I run a qo4000 as my return, no probs so far. You should not run a qo externally as they run super hot. They need the water to cool them.
