r Blue mushrooms only blue under actinics?

I love the color of blue mushrooms almost periwinkle in color or royal blue. Every times I ask the LFS for blue mushrooms they point me to the brownish ones and say they're blue under the right lighting.
Am I looking for something that doesn't exist or should I get the brownish ones and hope they color up under my lighting?

I'd say your lfs is full of the stuff that makes grass green, nearly all of the blue mushrooms that I've seen are blue under any lighting, including a light bulb

my lavendar ones are always lavandar. There are some brown mushrooms that will show a blueish cast when under actinics, but they are brown mushrooms.

I have some purple ones that under the right light show more blue - its funny, though, i bought a small rock with say 4 polyps- under VHO lighting at the LFS they looked.. all blue- under my lighting 1 is still blue and the other 3 are purple (PC in aquapod)

I plan to put one or two in my 55 when i get it going - will be neat to see how they look under T5

No...They are not the true blues....I am sorry..They are gorgeous don't get me wrong.....But they are not the true blues....When you see them you will know....

Thanks everyone, Maybe i'll have to order some since all the pet stores I've been to only have the brown ones with a blueish sheen to them. At least I know that there are true blue ones now.

BTW you have beautiful blues drummereef!

Off the subject. Syrinx, are you a flautist? there is a flute peice with your name.

Thanks lildraken! Those were pics right when I got them. I'll have to update my gallery now that they have multiplied.

No I am actually a guitar player. One of my motorcycles is "Syrinx" So people relate that to me.

How about these? taken under 12K Reeflux MH and a couple actinic VHO....Definately blue under normal lighting conditions...

I have a group of shrooms that goes from purple to blue back and forth. Wish they would make up their...minds? Anyone have the same problem? This is under the same lighting all the time.

Possibly they were trying to say that under "good" lighting they will(eventually) be blue, but under there "not so good" lighting and or system conditions they are currently brown. Any colored mushroom can go brown if there kept to shaded or lowly lit.

The "blue mushrooms" we have started out red at the LFS. We saw some blue ones in one of the show tanks, asked if we could buy them, and were pointed to a tank with red mushrooms in it. We were told they turned colors because of poor lighting in the tank he kept them in and once they were under better lighting they'd turn blue. After a couple of weeks in our tank, they started turning... first it was reddish-purple, then purple, and now (several months later) they are bluish-purple all the time. I don't know if we have true blue mushrooms, but that's just the experience we've had with ours.

fsn77, what kind of lighting do you have? i thought that shrooms didn't require as bright of lighting such as metal halides. what exactly is "good" lighting for shrooms?

We only have 4 x 65w PC (2 10000K and 2 actinic) and 2 x 40w NO (both actinic) on our 90g at the moment . Soon, we'll be switching to T5 HO. Nonetheless, our mushrooms do really well on the bottom of our tank with the PC lights. They're spreading off of the original rock they came on, leaving new mushrooms behind as they move.

The "bad lighting" that was at the LFS was due to overly old bulbs. I don't remember what kind of lighting it is (some type of fluorescent), but the guy freely admitted the bulbs were way overdue to be changed out.
