Radion Powered SPS Nanocube

This looks great. Funny, I be been forced to downsize to a bio cube from an dual radion lit tank. I have my 2 up for sale locally but I may hang on to 1 to do as u have done. I love the lights due to their control and results. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for the compliments!! Definitely hold onto a Radion for your smaller tank, and good luck with it! :)

Just a random cell pic from tonight:

Radion give realy nice color to the tank!

Thanks, and I agree for the most part! Not all corals seem to like the LED long term, but most do.

Have you added any flow to your tank since your last update? Along with any major changes in your lighting cycle?

No changes in flow other then upping the MP10 to 100%. I still feel with all the coral growth that there is too much blocked flow and I am getting dead zones now, so have been thinking about adding a 2nd MP10 and running them sync'd but with the intensity reduced.

For the lighting I tried upping to 80% daytime intensity and ended up burning the tips of the corals so have backed it back down to 70%. No changes in duration, color, etc.

How fast would u say your rics grow? i notice you have 3 distinct colors and it seems like they're growing on top of each other as if they ran out out of room. Also do you do anything to control your Green star polyp from taking over the rock? Or does it just grow relatively slow?

Very nice tank. I understand this is in the SPS forum. I'm trying a mixed reef with SPS and LPS. I noticed in the first picture in the thread there was a Lobo right behind the Pink Birdnest. It was positioned higher in the tank relative to many of the other sps. In the last tank shot it appears to be gone. Did it bleach or anything because of the high lighting?

Generally I locate my LPS at the bottom third of the tank and am reserving the upper two thirds for sps. Seeing your placement seems to indicate that many of your sps may not need as much light as I think they do.

I have 6 x 24w T-5's. I know if I put a lobo up near the top it would fry. I have a pink birdnest and asst'd monti's near top and they seem to be ok.

I'd say the rics grow at a medium rate, yes I have 3 colors, and they do grow all over each other, but I like how that makes it look like one large coral. They constantly move towards the edge of the rock and eventually will crawl into the sand, at which point I will sell whatever falls off to local reefers. I took the GSP out of the tank about a year ago, it grows too fast, there is no way to control it, and it just didn't fit in with the theme I was going for (SPS dominant).

LPS will do fine higher up in the tank, as long as you acclimate them to higher light. Even SPS needs to be light acclimated to their position in your tank. I never had a problem with it bleaching, as stated above I was moving away from LPS/Softy into an SPS dominant so replaced the lobo with SPS.

IME SPS definitely require more light then other corals, especially acros and stylo's. Birdsnests and monti's can deal with lower light. My tank also has enough light intensity that I can grow anything at any depth, including maxima clams and acros on the sandbed, so placement isn't a large concern in my case. HTH

Hi, i am starting a 30 rimless, i was wondering if you have the radion pro or gen 2 fixture, i just really admire your tank and would love to crate something like it, thanks.

I'm actually using the original Radion, probably one of the first ones made. I managed to get it before the official release date because my LFS was an EcoTech preferred vendor and got a small shipment in for pre-sale. I've seen some good results with the Pro, but still don't have any complaints about the original one after years of use.

Been following and inspired by your tank while setting up my own, good work!

Haha, thanks!! Will keep an eye out for your thread, would love to see how it turns out.

Your SPS look great

Thank you so much!

Though I should note, through a serious of unfortunate events the tank is just about torn down and all of the SPS is gone. Right now it's basically just an ugly holding tank for my prized clowns and a couple of clams. But not to fear, getting set back up from scratch in an RL30 that will be SPS/clam only. Most of the equipment will be carried over, but a scratch start on rock and aquascape leveraging some lessons learned from my first tank (the JBJ28) and I am hoping for some awesome results! :bounce3:

Nice choice on bikes, I've always been a Kawi guy though currently I only own a Suzuki. Looking to do a KX450 supermoto build soon though!
