My neighbor just tested for radon and got a reading of 4.2 which i find out is an unsafe level for living in. Both my family and my fish live in my basement, so im going to test. Does anyone have any experience with testing and if needed getting a radon filtering system? I tried to find some information in D.I.Y. but it all says to contact a state licenced contractor. Im wondering about the cost of installation...Thanks...

testing is cheap 110 for eperm and 145 for a continuest monitoring. If you need to filter it probably cost about 1200 or so. Although 4.2 is considered unsafe it is not that bad. Just a little over the 4.0 that is considered safe. A very border line call.

I would get a cheap test kit first. Several of my neighbors had venting devices installed so I figured my house better get tested..but after using the kit (mine was about $15 total) and getting the lab results - via the web - mine measured well below even the lowest limit.

My neighbors had theirs installed for less than 1000 but we have small houses. It's really a pretty basic thing. It's not even a "filter" per se, just a fan pulling air from a hole, that keeps a slight negative pressure under your slab so that gas doesn't come up.

Anyway, I'd play it one step at a time; you may not even need it, even if your neighbors did at one time.
