Rainbow montipora question

cato

New England
Are they intense light lovers??? As mine encrusts and new polyps develop they are sweet florescent colors. But as it grows out more the polyps brown out. My superman is doing great but its also about 6" higher than the rainbow. Wondering if they demand intense light to really color up. All params are good with the exception of of PO4 @ 0.06 (via photometer reading) Could that be doing it?? Thanks all.

My Rainbow seems to be growing and polyp extension is great. The thing that sucks is my coral is brown and its about 13" from a 250 14k hamilton. I think I have a Phos. problem though:0(

My rainbow monti is directly under my 400watt halides and between 2 6100 Tunzes. Does it like intense light and high flow ? Hell Ya !

in the center of a 250w hqi ushio an inch from my modded nano stream.
they can handle and do well in very hight flow

i had mine in middle almost lower :p of my 37 gal tank and it's brown with only red polyps :( (i got 175hm 14k)...i just moved mine way up ....well close to the top, hopefully it'll color up there

scott, how long did it take for yours to change colors? mine browned out and kinda STN'd a tiny bit over spring break when i was on vacation for a week, and i got to to start growing back, its doubled, and layed out a decent 1/4" base, but tis still orange polyps blue skin. its about 1.5x1.5" now, and has weekly growth noticeable now...

Just started coloring up over past few months and it's encrusting pretty quickly. It's growing fast but like yours only orange polyps along the new growth edge and browner inward.

oh this is great! i read this thread and went and moved my monti higher up in the reef.........

i just checked it! it fell from its perch and landed on one of my acan colonies. it looks alittle chewed up.

geezzzeee cato! thanks alot! lol

I've been lazy tonight...haven't moved mine yet. How many beers have you had tonight?

Here is my poor rainbow not looking so hot:0(

High light, low light, all mine seem to do ok. One is up in the rockwork while the other is on the sand (where I grow out frags). Both get medium-high flow.

i have a question :)
how do they change from Brown to their color?
It's been a week for mine since i moved it to the top and now it looks like tan color sort of like a very very light brown.

Give it time. It will take a good month or so for it to really change color if the conditions are right. The first thing you'll notice is the body will lighten to an almost whitish blue color before it starts to intensify. Than you'll start to see the polyps color up. Next is when it will start to grow and encrust. All this assumes that it is happy with your water parameters and lighting.

Yup, it takes a little time to color up. When I got mine, it was browned out and there was only a small piece of an edge that had any blue color to it. Here is a picture of it now showing the bright colors of the polyps against the blue base:
