Raising Salinity during TTM with Prazipro?

Quick question, when I am doing my transfers, can I put my new tank next to my old one for easy transfer? Then remove old tank to wash and dry in seperate room. I don't need to worry about aerosalization with anything but my display tank right? Just have to wash and dry/keep dry everything for 24-48hrs before using again? And I'll be minimizing water transfer with a colander btw.

that shouldn't be a problem as long as you aren't getting noticeable splash over to the other tank where any build-up of water forms, even if just a few droplets sized.

you could also just cover it with a towel to help out with that. and i wouldn't leave the tanks 'touching' close, just within a reasonable distance is fine.

Ok, but when I transfer the fish with a colander there is going to be some drops getting in obviously, that's OK right?

Thanks for all your help btw

Correct, that water is ok.

The difference is in the timing of the incidental water transferred. During a transfer lets say a protomont comes with it, which is the only stage possible (other than trophonts still on the fish of course). These protomonts would still take several more hours to form a cyst/tomont, and another 72 hours minimum to release theronts... but you would have done a transfer by then so no harm will have come from that incidental protomont transfer.

Now consider incidental splashing of water over time. If it splashed say a day before your next transfer, it is plausible that a protomont formed a cyst within a droplet and is in its 72 hour countdown when you fill up that tank. Theronts could be released before the next transfer. I feel like this hypothetical situation is a long shot, but in theory is possible.

I gotcha, that would be impossible in my case because I only meant moving it next to the other tank right before a transfer. Perfect thanks!

Hey my clowns have stopped eating since I transferred them to the 2nd tank. Today is the 2nd day with no eating. Any thoughts? How long can they go without eating before I should be concerned?

I've tried 3 different types of pellets, starting with what they were eating before and at the breeders.

are you mixing new water each time or using water from your DT or another source?

how long are you mixing beforehand if new water?

if they were always eating pellets, then I don't see why they would stop now. however, you may want to go get some more enticing food such as mysis or brine shrimp (even frozen).

i have a thread somewhere on this forum where I was worried for almost a week that one of my new Tang's (I think it was a powder blue) boycotted eating during TTM. everyone kept telling me that it will eventually start up and not to worry. and low and behold, they were right, it just took a week. some fish just take longer to adapt to a new environment. albeit, i would think clowns are the least likely of that category.

keep an eye on them for a couple more days and see if anything changes with your current or supplement food and report back. hopefully we can figure this out.

I'm mixing new because I have been raising the salinity .001 every transfer, maybe that's stressing them out or it was simply the transfer itself. Im letting it mix/aerate heavily for 24hrs minimum.

Right before the first transfer I fed them heavy with PE calanus and they went nuts. 2nd transfer is today so I'll try that. I have heard the same thing that it is normal for some new fish not to eat for a few days in TTM. I will keep you posted.

Thanks for the help again

Ok so both fish seemed fine last night after the transfer. I believe they ate a little PE Calanus but it's hard to tell if they spit it out everytime or swallow some. I just fed today and had a good feeding response from the bigger one (always more active) and even though it spit a lot of food out, I think it ate some as well.

The little clown however, has not even been coming up for the food more than once per feeding, like halfway at the most when it does. I'm not sure it's eaten anything in the last 4-5 days. I wasnt too concerned as ive been told this can happen, but I noticed this time that it was on the bottom of the brute kind of listing very slowly. It moved around before and after that but in general it has stayed tucked away on the bottom. This is the first time it listed however. It has also been moving significantly slower than the big one from the get go.

Should I be concerned? Any idea what it could be? Is it possible the bigger one has bullied him into submission at the bottom of the tank? Are any diseases associated with listing, I don't see any other symptoms.

I've heard some fish do this from stress as well but I've never seen it outside of an LFS

Unfortunately the smaller clown passed tonight. Only thing I could see upon inspection was it looked very thin and had reddish belly/a little bit in one eye. Can't tell if it's surface blood or internal. Warning, pics of dead fish in next post. I want to figure out what happened so I can save the other fish if contagious.

Sorry, not the best pics but it's a really small fish. You can see the red belly and one fin had a little. From the bottom of the fish the belly is even more red but I forgot to take a picture. Any thoughts? I salted and froze it so I can bring it to my lfs for inspection tomorrow [emoji53].

Hoping my other fish will remain unaffected. I dosed prime just incase even though I pulled the fish within an hour or two of its death.

Thanks

Quick question, if Temp and Salinity are matched, do i have to worry about pH? My display tank is 8.1-8.3 and my ttm tank is probably 7.8. I have to transfer the fish to my display tank tomorrow, do I have to drip acclimate and if so how long?

No, pH won't matter. Just get salinity and temp right. Alkalinity is what you really care about when it comes to pH impacted parameters anyway. If you wanted to be reasonably sure the water is a near-perfect match, check the Alk of both the new water and transferring water and see if it is near'ish in value. I'd not even blink at a difference of even 3 dKH.

I doubt it will be off by much more, but different salt mixes do vary significantly. And it will be difficult for you to lower your new water to match the old water if that is how the values are off. Obviously it is easy to raise alkalinity in the new water, but you would want to let it settle for a couple hours before putting the fish in there.... i.e. just leave it alone and drop them fish in :fish1:
