Raising SPS corals

Another thing, that is often overlooked with the inability to maintain pieces over time.......

The size of the tank, and how its stocked. With the size you have, you are trying to keep pieces that can be very demanding on the water and its ability to supply everything.

You are probably not per se doing anything "wrong" but the smaller the water volume, the more pieces you have, the bigger they get....you hit the wall on carrying capacity and things start going down hill, because you unknowingly stepped up into a superdemand that your routine no longer supports.

In a way, I think trying to keep SPS in smaller tanks (100gal and smaller) can be actually tougher than those 100gal and greater.

In fact, things seem a lot easier because of the added stabiltiy, carrying capacity of the water for nutrients, heat, supplements, even fish etc, and they can almost "break the rules".

On the other hand, those with smaller tanks need to be uber vigilant and on top of things as some one said, once to me "trying to keep the params stable in an nano is like balancing a pizza box on your finger."

I would bet, if you consolidate both your tanks, go to a singular bigger one, this problem would melt away.

Not saying it can't be done, just harder. I have been considering turning my nano into a QT/frag tank and its just 24gals, I keep thinking what I would have to do to keep it even as stable as my 75, and it discourages me.

Something to consider, you may just be hitting a wall and it may be time to step up to the plate and invest in a bigger tank?

thanks for all the help everyone. i think it is just the fact that its too small of aquarium...+ i should have used 100 % live Rock.. well, a lesson learned the hard way...i do have plans for a 150 Gallon SPS only system in the next few years...of course that would cost as much as a Sports Car so its cant be Extremely soon

i know i have NEVER had troubles like this with my 55g tank..heck, ive never even lost a coral in that aquarium :D , i have had that one single toadstool for about 3 years now, it started as a 1/2 inch frag now its about 1 foot wide & now i have over 30 toadstools !!.. same goes with all my other soft corals in that system :) got some Zoanthus coming soon..there going in the 55g tank
