Random Odd Questions

Hello All,

I have been saving up some random oddball questions and wondered if anyone would chime in with some advice...

-- How do you control the growth/spread of some corals? In my case anthelia which has already covered about as much space as I want them to have covered and eventually my GSP will need to be reined in.
-- All the corals in my tank seem to be doing well except for my zoos. Some days they just dont all open up well, they seem to have really long 'stalks' before their button tops? What should I do to help them out?
-- I have been feeding my bubble coral silversides, how much and how often should it eat?
-- I had a fairly largeish purply mushroom that sortof melted where its foot attaches to the rock and it's top curled up some so it doesnt open like it used to. then where its foot had melted now there are lots of baby mushrooms, is that normal? It didnt look like a healthy process but I guess nothing bad came of it?
-- I have a single ricordia polyp that never wants to stay in one place. I am scared to glue it down somewhere for fear that I will pick the wrong spot.....
-- I have some hairy mushrooms that I would almost swear are not as green as when I got them. How do I prevent the colour loss?
-- I have some sort of odd growth on one of my rocks that is really pretty, how do I know if it is a coral or a sponge, it has grown in I guess what you would call a plate like manner and is dark red with orange trim.
-- I have been using Phosban, how often should I change it and should I just run it all the time or only every now and again.
-- my pulsing xenia just dont seem to pulse much any more, is it cause of too much flow?
-- Is it possible that I should rearange my rockwork for better waterflow? Are there any rules that I should have followed when aquascaping that I didnt know about?

Thanks to anyone who has pointers for me. Here is the fine print for anyone who needs it...

I have a 55 gal that has been up since Christmas and run a 260pc fixture, my parameters are all pretty normal/stable. I run sg at 1.026 or 7 and a temp at about 80 degrees. I do a 5 gal water change every week to 10 days. My skimmer does not produce as much funk as it should, but I am getting a new one in about a month. I have about 50 lbs of rock, and have just recovered from a red slime/hair algae problem. I have a tomato clown, a yellow watchman, and a fairy wrasse, pistol shrimp, coral banded shrimp, and other misc critters.

Controlling the growth: pruning shears. :) Seriously, every couple of months I have to take out some rock and prune them back. Stay on top of GSP's, the take extra time to scrape off the rock and can become a troublesome (they will nearly always win property warfare).

Zooanthids need moderate light and moderate flow. Its too much flow if it prevents the polyps from opening. The long stalks make me think that they aren't getting enough light in that location. BTW, how old are you PC bulbs? The same with the mushrooms and ricordia for that matter. PC bulbs need to be changed every 6-9 months... long than that and you will find that soft corals such as these dont tend to do as well as they once did.

Pusling xenia need good flow. You can't give them enough flow. Your skimmer also benefits from more and more flow in the display. It keeps those nutrients suspended instead of falling to the bottom. Arranging rockwork usually isn't the solution, but adding more mechanical flow. I did mine with two maxi-jet modifications and love it. Do a quick search on RC, they are quick and easy and very effective.

Trim, pull, etc. If you really need to get rid of it, pull the rock, let it die and then scrub it and put it back in the sump to "get live" again.

They're stretching for light I think too. If I take a frag of zo's or polyps from my main tank to my 55 w/260PC's they do they same thing.

-- I had a fairly largeish purply mushroom that sortof melted where its foot attaches to the rock and it's top curled up some so it doesnt open like it used to. then where its foot had melted now there are lots of baby mushrooms, is that normal? Sounds normal to me. Unfortunately I see that too much and am now in the "kalk em while they're young" mode.

The ricordia you can try putting in a floating change tray like what you put your keys and stuff in when going through a metal detector. Put some styrofoam on 2 sides so it floats, place a lot of rubble and it will eventually grab a rock in there. Wherever it chooses will probably not be where you would choose.

Color is a funny thing. Lighting, nitrates, phosphates etc all determine the color. PC's don't really have the same color choices and effects as mh's or t5's which over time will color up/down a coral. All you can do is wait, and if you decide you don't like the colors, change the lighting or change the coral.

-- I have some sort of odd growth on one of my rocks that is really pretty, how do I know if it is a coral or a sponge, it has grown in I guess what you would call a plate like manner and is dark red with orange trim.

Pics!!!!

-- I have been using Phosban, how often should I change it and should I just run it all the time or only every now and again.

I run mine full time. You can use a phosphate test kit and compare tank level to the effluent coming out of the phosban reactor to see if it is still lowering the levels. If you are trying to lower the phosphate levels I'd change in about a month. If trying to maintain low levels you might get 2-3 months.

-- my pulsing xenia just dont seem to pulse much any more, is it cause of too much flow?

Possible, what flow levels do you have? If you turn off the powerheads and pumps does it pulse then?

-- Is it possible that I should rearange my rockwork for better waterflow? Are there any rules that I should have followed when aquascaping that I didnt know about?

pics!!! Really just try to have as loose of a structure as possible w/o risking collapse of the rocks. Fine line. You can also do some plastic ties through holes drilled to secure. Or plastic pins, or epoxy. Or even a pvc rack structure that you slide the rocks on but you need to make some large holes to slide them on. You're probaly ok with it it way you are though. Sometimes a small powerhead dropped behind the rockwork helps too.
