is there a preferred thickness or depth of sandbed in an sps tank? I have about 2 inches of Olite live sand on my aquarium bottom. I have seen far less and was concerned that I have too much but do not want to consider BB

You should be fine. Some say a DSB should be used, some say a BB. Do what you like. They say a DSB help with nitrates. I don't know if that is really true or not. I use it to complete the look of my tank.
