You need to test for both calcium and alkalinity then use Randy's handy Reef Chemistry Calculator to see how much. You can also test for Magnesium and add a supplement for that if you so wish.

but is ph and alkalinity the same and on the calculater it does not have water volumes for tank sizes is that not important?
No Harold they are not the same. When making the additions the pH effect is shown at the bottom of the calculator. You fill in the volume of the tank (include you sump and fuge volume too) at the very top where it says [color=light blue]Volume Calculator[/color].
