RBTA propogation

I was just curious if cutting a nem into 4 pieces is normal practice. There seems to be a bunch of people in my local forum with like 50 nems they keep cutting up. It seems to me like this would stress them over time. Just curious if its just like fragging a coral or not.

I just think its kind of disgusting that people cut them up as much as they do. I mean I think there is a difference between cutting it up here and there to cutting it to the point of having 50 of them where the foot diameter is like a dime. I mean the foot on my rose was about 12 inches and the thing split every other month and everyone I know that has a clone of mine has the same result. Why cut sooo much

Why cut sooo much

They grow faster by cutting them. They tend to grow faster the smaller they are. Kind of like children. As they get a little older (bigger), their growth rate decreases. I think cutting them into 4s is a bit extreme, but 2 isn't

thats what I mean I have heard of people responsibly cutting them into two pieces but 4 like every few weeks is insane

I'm kind of torn on this as it seems kind of cruel to me. I know people seem to be in a hurry for some reason. Mine split the first time after 3 1/2 years.

Like I said I can see cutting it once and a whole but there are people that get 40 from one in like 8 months. I would just like to know how it effects them long term. It seems like people don't want to talk about it

Not a whole lot of people who cut BTA to begin with. Cutting them in 4 is pretty crazy and isn't something I have done or would do. The heal time on them has to be way higher than cutting them in half. I'm pretty sure you're not allowed to cut them up and sell them like that on RC, but I could be wrong.

@DC. Provided the anemone splits naturally like a BTA, I don't think it is cruel. Sure, it is a bit harsh, but so is cutting mushrooms. It's the same thing. I see where you are coming from though. Cutting a hadonni is cruel, because both halves usually end up dieing.

Debating that now.

I don't consider a anemone even remotely close to the same thing as a mushroon tho.

My rbta and gbta split about every other month I feed them every two days also and the each get a chunk of shrimp and they usually split from one to three by themselves I started with one and now I have 7 and I have sold quite a few .

Anemones are a lot like mushrooms though. One large polyp. Sticky tentacles to feed. Feed with a mouth. Feed and excrete through one opening. They are very much like mushrooms. They may be more delicate and not able to regenerate from small pieces like mushrooms, but they are pretty similar. Some of each split by fission naturally. Anemones may seem more "animal like" because they respond more to outside stimulus (shading, touching, feeding, etc), but mushrooms do that too. I had a discosoma neglecta that would eat just like a hadonni would.

How is an elephant ear mushroom much different than a hadonni (besides care requirements)?

Mushrooms can move too, just not as fast. :D They must get tired after moving 1/16"

I get what you're saying though. I do consider them more animal like than mushrooms. Just playing devil's advocate.
