SO...after a year and half or so in the hobby I think it's FINALLY starting to come together for us. we've got our water params all in line, flow is good and strong in the tank and, as of last night, we now have a lovely set of T5 lights on the tank. Now we're hoping to get an anem for our clowns because we're tired of them destroying the sand bed trying to bury themselves.

First of all, are the T5's proper lighting for a RBTA? how much flow is too much and our understanding is that nitrates MUST be zero - are there any other water concerns we should be keeping an eye out for that would be OK for fish and corals that could kill an anem if it was present?

AND, most importantly - does anyone one have an RBTA that has recently split or will be splitting and you'd like to sell one to us?

Hi Kerri,

I have my RBTA under T-5 lighting and they are getting blasted with flow. Mine seem to like it, however, they will move to where they are most comfortable in the tank, and that is the danger with them. For the most part, mine do not move, however, one moved around a few days ago and really stung my Frogspawn.

What lights did you end up getting?

Mine's huge, but sadly hasn't split, or I could just trade you. As for the flow, I had one that was right by the return on an 1800 gph pump, and was getting hit with 900 gph, loved it. If you don't want them to move, I'd suggest high flow, and put their foot in the shade. They like to reach out to get to the light, but have their foot, safely hidden away somewhere.

Ray - i'd LOVE to tell you what type of lights we have now but you'll have to wait til I talk to Jesse because I just don't do the mechanical stuff! My purpose is to research and make things stay alive I do know that he got them from Elmer's last night and they're T5's...


so ultimately, apart from being a creature that likes to move, you guys see no reason as to why we couldn't keep one? the b&w percs are just little terrors and need a new home so they stop pickin on my poor purple firefish!

My perc's have never gone in to any of my RBTA and it has been 3 years. I have a skunk that when in right away and a clarkii that when in right away also.

The RBTA's were added after the Percs had established in the tank. The skunk and clarkii were added after the RBTA, not sure if that was why they took to them so soon.

All clowns are very territorial, and getting them something to claim sadly won't make that any better. I think that tank raised percs are more likely to enjoy a BTA than wild caught. The January thread of the month (if anyone reads those) is about a clutch of 27 percs that are all in the same 220 gallon tank. She has a ton of RBTA and GBTA in there, and they go in and out of them all the time, but again, we're talking captive bred so maybe that makes the difference.

well, it's mostly hoping they take to the nem obviously but the RBTA's are so beautiful by themselves so whether the clowns take to it or not is not 100% the reason for wanting it...

I had a perc who enjoyed all my anenomes...a Sebea and a RBTA. He didn't spend a tremendous amount of time in any specific one, but did like them all, and was in and out of them all the time.

eh that's all we're hoping for is that they'll consider a nem as they've been pokin around the xenia and frogspawn, both of which are too small right now for the clowns. and trust me, territorial does not even begin to describe these guys! you put your hand in the tank and they are ALL OVER YOU!

at the meeting i won two of the anemones there... i believe they were just run of the mill bubble tips... i would be willing to sell one cheap or just for a frag or two if you are interested... one of them was very big and seems to be doing well... the other is about half the size but seems to hide in the cracks of the rocks...... the odd thing about them is they seem large and inflated at night but during the day are not as big... they are under a 250watt mh right now... can send pics if interested

ps corals i would be looking for are zoas and mushrooms... i would really liek a rock with a decent amount of shrooms on it already as i haven't had luck withgetting them to establish and spread in my tank

Shoot, wish you wanted some mushroom rock a few months ago when I upgraded from my 37g to 72g. I had more than I knew what to do with and was looking to get rid of it. plus i am close by in Bridgeville

I still have some shrooms hanging on (the flow in my new setup is too much for them) - but alas they are on the biggest rock in my tank.

Too bad, I wouldn't have minded trading for the BTA.

I hope to add more rock this weekend and do some re-aquascaping - so I know there are one or two other rocks that may have a couple shrooms on. if I can somehow find one with enough, I will let you know

so I got this BEAUTIFUL anem off of Ray (thanks!!!) and we drip acclimated her for almost 3 hours yesterday. put her on her rock and she took to it right away. her foot is solidly planted and she seems happy. today she appears to be purging as the foot is still solidly planted and the tenacles are deflated.

now, while she was purging i noticed two mouths - is she splitting or is she one of those cases i've read about with two mouths??
