Re using live sand? wash w/fresh water?

I just upgraded from a 16G to a 30G tank, I bought some new live sand. I also have the old sand from the 16g.
can I use this sand on the 30G? is it recommended?
also can I wash to clean this sand with freshwater?

Please give me some advices.

You can use the old sand yes, but i'm thinking i saw that it isnt a good idea or something...but washing it would definately get rid of everything...including all your pods and beneficial bacteria.

Old sand can be reused, cleaning depends on how dirty it is.

I would rinse it well in saltwater so you don't kill everything in it.

Thanks for all the info, I actually rinsed in fresh water before I got all the responses since the sand was really dirty. Now that I have all this sand on my 30 g alone with the new one, there's still a lot of pods and worms so I guess I didn't kill everything.
