Re using sand

I have a 75 gallon tank that got ich from a tang I introduced. I moved all the fish to an isolation tank and plan on taking down the 75 and setting up a 55 for them as my Oscar has out grown the 55. Do I need to through away the sand from the 75 or can I use it in te 55 if I let it dry out or soak it in fresh water? Anything I can do to salvage the sand? I hate to trash it

I think you'd be OK if you let it soak in f/w for, say, a week.

You can dry it completely, soak it in DI H20, or let it sit fallow for 8 weeks or so (see here for a full discussion on the fallow period)

The only concern I would have with using DI H20 is if there was enough salt left on the rock and not enough fresh water such that the actually salinity of the water ended up being high enough for the ich to survive. You should be able to get around that by rinsing it thoroughly and/or using enough water.

You'll have to cycle the new tank, so you'll probably be close to the fallow period anyway and could just wait an extra couple weeks before putting the fish back in.
