Ready for SPS!

Before I said to myself... "I like things that move." lol... now I want things that don't move so much. :cough: :cough: xenia

Anyways by the end of the month or so I will be buying my 1st SPS frag. I posted a thread in the SPS section and they told me my lights will do fine. Its 4 x 75w VHOs - 2 X10k, 1 actinic, and 1 aquasun (should have gotten another actinic).

I am currently dosing Kalkwasser and plan to stay on it. It should be sufficient considering that most of the other corals don't take in a lot of calcium.

Any other advice I should know before I do something I shouldn't?

Meh. Most SPS will take a fair ammount of abuse. Don't worry too much until you start spending the $$$ on the crazy SPS. Start with montis, move into milles, birdsnest, stylophora, and then eventually Acros. Acros are usually the hardest to keep, with the lightest color acros and table acros the hardest.

VHO should be just fine considering that before the big explosion of MH and T5, most (if not all) SPS keepers were using VHOs. Just keep in mind you've got to have a lot of flow, you've got to keep nitrates and phosphates down, and they're not as forgiving in swings (pH, alk, salinity) as some of those softies are.

good luck, and welcome to the SPS game....

Don't spend a ton of money on them at first until you know what does good and what doesn't. Go to Reef Life's Wednesday night Fragstravaganza and get inches of all kinds of SPS for 5 bucks per.
And they are the biggest inches I have ever seen :D

Will do but that will have to wait within the next few weeks. I've been to one of the wends fragfest, didnt see anything i wanted but that was when I was looking for soft/LPS corals. Need to get rid of the Xenia forest! LMK if you want any Pom Pom.

I believe Pat's doing a great job. U will not go wrong if u ask me, starting out in the sps world that would be the place to go get some advice and some easy to care caps and so forth-plus u just cant beat the frags(btw this are wild colony frags) but they are great pieces at an excellent pricing.
Other options include ORA plugs of easy to care SPS-u can get those at ECO REEF.
