Hello RC- I have been a member and read alot of threads since I joined back in November. I dated a guy that broke my heart badly. He is an avid Reef Enthusiast and I fell in love with not just him, but his Tanks. I wanted to make sure that I didn't just want the reef because it was something we shared a love for but, for the right reasons. I haven't been able to get starting my own reef off my mind so here I am for some advice. I am on a low budget being a single mom, but my 5 year old daughter really wants a reef too. So, currently I have a Top Fin 29 gallon starter kit and nothing else. I need the Bare essentials list needed please to start cycling and getting this tank ready for a long and happy life. :-) Thank you in advance for any positive comments and suggestions.

This is my lonely opinion, but all you really need is live rock and good circulation with appropriate lighting..... everything else is not" needed".
Those three things and a blue thumb will get you far

Heather is right...and regular water changes weekly since no skimmer.

Buy one seeded piece of live rock and the rest dry rock...will save you a lot of money.

Lighting will be your biggest cost but buy used on Craigslist or RCs Buy Sell or Trade forums and get nice lights for half.

You're bringing up trama from all my teachers in grade school, It's Heath..lol

Katie, I started with a 30g tank and not much equipment as well. You can do it. The best thing you have going for you is your tight budget. It means you won't be going out and buying stuff you don't need and you'll take your time getting going. Heath is right, you don't need to break the bank to have a nice tank. Keep it simple and don't get distracted by all the 'extra' stuff for sale into this hobby. I almost never go to an LFS as way too many of them will sell you anything. Ask questions here and see if there is a local club you can join. It took me a couple years to find RC and a local club. That was a huge improvement in my learning curve.

Good luck and always remember, nothing good happens quickly in a marine aquarium.
