Real Reef Rocks

Any body using Real Reef Rock in there Reef tank?

I will be happy if some one share their personal experiences wile keeping them
And
Any positive and negative Reference about these

I have the reel reef rock and looking back it was a waste of money. All it is is rock spored with bacteria though you still need to cycle since most dies off anyway without feeding...

Either go true live rock from someone like TBS with little to no die off or get dry rock and seed yourself.

First, beautiful yes.. but full of good and bad critters.. I mean full!

Second, the Walt Smith 2.0 rock is placed in the ocean to cure as well, so TBS is not the only one doing this. I am running the 2.1 rock and absolutely love it. I seeded it from my main tank and now I have clean live rock.

Reef Rock 2.0 & 2.1 are the new rocks by Walt Smith. Most of you know Walt Smith as the major supplier of live rock to the aquarium industry. Reef Rock 2.0 and 2.1 are the update to their previous man made and aqua-cultured rocks. Reef Rock 2.0 is their aqua-cultured version that is placed in the ocean for six months before being sold. Reef Rock 2.1 is the dry version of the same rock.
The rock is available in a variety of different shapes and styles including honeycomb, shelf, and cave rock. The rock is made with porous materials mixed in to make it extra porous and light. Because of the porosity, Reef Rock can be up to 30% lighter than its live rock counter part and make for a great host for beneficial bacteria.
As the acceptable quotas for live rock harvest decline in the upcoming years, Reef Rock has the potential to be an acceptable and sustainable substitute.

Yup, and this is what TBS is now putting out in their lease and it's getting populated CRAZY fast!

I thought they were Fiji based curing, or is TBS using Walt's rock as well?

Correct, TBS is now using this as well as Walt Smith himself.
It gets nicely populated in both places but for some reason it's happening at an astounding rate in the Tampa location.

But the OP asked about real reef rock which is like the carib sea rock that has been seeded with bacteria but not actively cured that you see sold in many LFS. It looks a lot like Walt's rock since it too is purple but they charge signicantly more for it and it is not worth it. Better to buy Walt's rock dry and seed yourself OR get some aqua cultured like the TBS

The rock is silly light, and stacks real easy. I really like it and wish it was around when I set up my big tank.

Right I read this when you post it. Must of forgot it was Walt's stuff as well.

Is the Walt 2.0 stuff the only thing TBS sells now? I dont see on the website where you have the option to get "the 2.0 stuff" only..

I've been debating between the Walt Smith 2.1 (dry) or going with Reefcleaner rock. Still waiting for some reviews to actually pop up on the 2.1.

I used reefcleaner rock and I couldn't be happier! Great rock and John is great to deal with. Email him and tell him how you want to aquascape and he will pick out rock for you.

I also used a few pieces for the real reef rock 2.0. This stuff is super light and easy to work with.

I used it on a recent build. Super light and seeded very fast yes.

See that's the problem, I haven't heard anything bad about either choice. I like easy decisions!

I'll make one quick point about buying "real" live rock... If ain't shipped in water and arriving to you within 24 hours you are buying stinky dead rock and it will have to be cured. Oh the smell.

Nothing wrong with either option, live or dry. IMO, dry is the opposite of what we want for our tanks... LIFE. I want a real full blown REEF, not a test cube with a handful of diversity.
