So my last sponge filter had this habit of getting pretty nasty for some reason... too much bacteria and not enough flow maybe. Instead of going out and buying a new filter I had an idea... A DIY "sponge" filter with replaceable media
Materials: A CD container (the plastic ones the blank Cd's come in) and Filter floss
Tools needed: A drill and a couple bits
Extra stuff needed: A powerhead
First I cut off the spindle that holds the CD on the base and filled the hole with epoxy
Next Drill a 1" hole in the top center of the clear "can" and fit the tapered adapter for the powerhead
To get flow through the media you drill holes in the side of the "can"
This can be tricky because the plastic is a little brittle and will crack easily... going slow and having something for backing will help avoid cracking
Next fill your can with whatever media you like and screw the can to the base... I'm just using pillow stuffing that I got at a fabric store... $5.00 for more than I'll ever be able to use but you could also run carbon or other media on a bag if you wanted
And you're ready to go... replace media/floss as needed
