hey whats up guys?. I got a pretty big montipora Cap from a fellow Reefer, and i had a few questions. Well when i recieved it, it had a little bit of bleaching. I put it in my tank last night ( lights out ) and this morning when the lights came on, i noticed that where it was bleaching there is now what looks like a brown film covering the bleached areas. This does not look like algae. Also it seems as the day goes by the brown film is kinda thickening. So do any of you guys have a opinion or know anything?, any help would be appreciated.

Do a search for 'brown jelly' here on RC, if it is this, you'll need to take care of it asap.

Good luck!

If this is brown jelly, what would be the best way to frag a Montipora cap?. Just break it?.

You can just break off the good areas. Keep them in a high flow area to make sure no Brown Jelly is on them ot starts up again, then just toss the infected areas. I'd do this in a seperate container outside of your tank to be safe.

I've never heard of a brown jelly infection on sps. LPS like hammers/frogspawn, but never on a SPS. I could be wrong however.

If it is dead, a brown film will cover it and it is algae/discoloration. Either frag around it or it will re-encrust.

I've had Brown Jelly infections on several of my Montiporas, not sure how it started but if you don't get to it fast it spreads.

secret, haha thanks, still had my St. Patrik's one up there so figured I needed to change it, plus 'rejected' is just hilarious.

yeah this would be the first of hearing about brown jelly taking over SPS. But i have read several threads now, about people loosing there Monti's due to Brown jelly

lol funny guy. I dont think it is brown jelly. I got off of work and i have noticed it spread at all. and thats after about 12 hours from when i noticed it. What do you think i should do? wait it out? or frag it now while it still relatively healthy?. Hey ChAoTic, my brothers Banner fish died today... i had to fish him outa the rockwork, and it sucked!. The bioload on he's tank is way to big.....

i have found caps to be bery resilient and able to heal themselves after small injuries. just yesterday while re-arranging some rock, something happend to my orange cap and a 1/4 inch area slimed up, with the orange color in the slime, and that area lost its flesh. today half that spot has healed. i must have hit it with something, maybe a green slimer. i have had acros rtn and halt and heal fully, so i wouldn't be too quick to frag it unless it spreads.
