Recirculating skimmers

how much better is it to get a recirculationg skimmer than just a regular skimmer? There is a big price jump for the euroreefs and im not even sure what the big advantage is.:fun2:

Ive never had one that was recirc but from what I have gathered its not a hard DIY project, a holesaw, uniseals and a pump should be all thats needed. Check the diy forum for some more info.

The real advantage comes from the contact time of the foam and the water. Most skimmers push the water through in seconds rather than minutes. The ideal time water should stay in the foamy section of a skimmer is up to 2 minutes. This allows all the protein molecules to bond with the foam and work there way out of the skimmer as skimate.

From what I have read on the Euroreef thread

http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=972765

There is about a 25% increase in efficiency over the needle-wheel skimmers. There is also something about a mesh impeller -
I haven't read up on it - but it's supposed to be very good. Also some tips on doing the mods.

I have had a CS6-1 since they came out - it has been great. When we upgraded our 90 to a 150 I went with a RS 180.
Can't say if it works or not cause the darn thing is obscenely loud. It hasn't made it out of the bath tub yet.......
They have sent a new impeller and now a new pump is on the way.
If that doesn't work - it's going back to the dealer and I will spend the money and get a RC180.
The bigger RC's use Eheim pumps that are very quiet and energy efficient.

the recirculating skimmers get their advantage, because of the increased contact time. but they become really efficient when fed from your overflow. all you need to do that is add a tee and ball valve. for a good RC skimmer-i'd recommend the H&S line. or if you are rich you can look at the deltecs. for more help/info on h&s skimmers, check out finsreef in sponsors forum.

im fixin to do a mesh mod on one of my skimmers. i have the sedra 7000 pump so i am hoping to beef it up.

i moded my 6-3 euro with the recirculating mod and seen a difference. nothing to make anybody go crazy about but a difference. i use a eheim 1048 for feed. ihave a 150 so its exactly 1x over a hour as per euroreef. the mod cost me around 25 to 30 and the pump was 50. i like eheim for feed rather than maxijet etc.
