Recommendation for the FMAS Auction process

I think the FMAS frag/fish auction that usually follows each monthly meeting would be greatly improved if potential bidders could see a projected picture of the sale item. I don't mean a picture of the item sitting in the plastic bag, but a picture from the owner's tank. Sellers could send their items to a point of contact, who would then burn a CD and bring it to the meeting. I would be happy to serve as the point of contact for this, unless the FMAS officers wanted to do it.

It's a great idea, we'll talk about it at the next board of directors meeting and see what we can work out. I think the idea will depend on how willing member are to get us pictures.

When and if I bring frags to the meets, I will print an actual picture of the frag itself under the lighting so everyone can see. I don't think this can apply to some people because some people just don't own a camera. But for those who can take pictures, I'm sure a lot of people will appreciate it.

I'm all for this, as it would benefit both buyers and sellers. Sellers can see what they're bidding on, and buyers may find that a coral garners more interest based on an in-tank picture. Some very nice pieces just don't look like much in a plastic bag.

Yup, nice idea, it may even help speed up the auction.
As long as the slide show is made ahead of time and we get someone in charge of collecting images from the members bringing the items, we might even go a step further and email this slide show ahead of time to all memebers so we can all see the items, know what to expect and plan bids ahead of time.

I think we need to be realistic....I don't think we will be able to email out pictures ahead of time....but we could start an auction thread each month where member's could post pics.

We could show a picture that a member brings with there frags at the time the item is being auctioned. Also members are always encouraged to look at the items before the meeting starts.

Yes you are right, that will not happen, however the idea you have of starting a thead of the items you intend to bring will probably be effective.

Great idea but I think a combination for these will work best a thread for those active in Reef Central and a color print at the meeting for all members to preview before the auction.
Do we have an idea of what % of the membership participates in this forum?

Okay, one person serves as the point of contact. The easy part is for those of us who bring lots of frags every month. A good picture of the parent colony would serve every month, so tons of emails don't go flying about. The frags can be labelled as from whom they came, and each person who regularly puts in frags would have their own folder. That way the pics are easy to find. This could also be the start of a really cool photo album for the website to help the newbies ID their coral and see what the frags they just bought will grow into. Of course, I'd send in pics of my orange digitata, miami orchid, red capricornis, shrooms, zoos, etc.

Less than 25% of the club participates on this forum. This forum has been mentioned on our Newsletter and at meetings but alot of our members just don't have the time or desire to spend on the forum.

I think we should just either bring a picture of the frag or have it on disc. Why do you ask? Because it gives the person who wants to go to the auction a suspense on what MIGHT be there and not... it will encourage them to come. ;)

All this talk about frags is starting to sounds like REQUIREMENTs in order to have a frag for the swap and thats a big turn off for those who donate stuff IMO.

So lets just keep it real and say, "If you want to donate a frag, PLEASE if you can provide a picture along with it. It will be appreicated. Thank you!"

LOL... I'm starting to frag some mushrooms now. Xenias are up next. :)

Eric, I am not sure what you are referring, but I think it has to do with the fact that the proceedings of the auction are split between the club and the owner of the frag.

Personally I wouldn't call this donate anything, I have gone out of the meeting with $80 in my pockets out of small cuttings of my corals or perhaps pieces that I had lost interest in.
I find this to be a very nice way to make space for new corals for me and a way to collaborate with the club to help it grow and profit, after all if you really think about it the club is not a company that produces anything especially money and all this refreshments, cookies etc that we enjoy at each meeting are purchased from the money the club makes from the only two ways of income, annual memberships and the auction proceedings.

This last auction had very little items, not many people brought things and that ultimately hurts the club finances, The reasons for this low turnout varies, I guess it could be because this was an odd meeting with a great speaker or many new members aren’t aware yet that they can bring stuff of their own or maybe just no reason, however, If there is anything we as members can do to try to elevate the member participation in this auction why not do it, at the end it is only good for all of us, don’t you think?

I also forgot to add that i have gotten some terrific bargains my self in the auction, so this is also a member advantage to be able to purchase stuff at bargain prices, it is a win win for everyone

Oh sorry about that Rogger, I forgot people actually make money on larger items that can go for more then $20.

So yeah, I guess for those who plan on selling large items or really nice corals a picture would be a good idea.
