Recommendations for first clam

Hey,

I'm a clam virgin, but I want to get one. My tank is 240 gal that is 36" deep. I do have a fairly deep sand bed, so anything on the sand will be about 30-32" beneath the tank top. About 8" above that, I have 4x250W HQI (AB 10000, which are supposedly 13K or so color temp) and 4x39W T5 ocean blues.

If I put a clam on the sand, will I have enough light to do a maxima or crocea? Or should I stick with something like a derasa? I've heard varying opinions, so I thought I would check here at "Clam Central."

Also...is putting a clam in the rocks an option? I always see them in the sand, but that could be a pretty obvious solution to the depth issue.

Thanks,
jds

from your tank description you should be able to keep any of the clams. most clams in the wild are found in close association with the reef, either up in the rocks or at the base of the reef. so yes you can place them up on the rocks. you could also keep them on the sand but with the depth you have i wouldnt try a Crocea or Maxima that far away from the light.
