Recommended camera for diving

Just got certified last week and would like to know a good diving camera for dives up to 100ft. I saw the Olympus 770 and looks pretty sweet.

Any others?

I have the Olympus 720.... I really like it for the deep dives...

I also like the SeaLife DC600 Digital Camera ....nice camers...

To the camera the depth is irrelavant, it's the housing that matters. Most of the Olympus and Cannon housings are spec'ed to 130 ft. If you need more than that look into Ikelite, they're usually rated to 200 ft.

If you're going to be taking pictures in deep water then invest in a good strobe. The Sea&Sea YS-110 works well with point and shoot cameras and can grow with you if you ever decide to move up to a DSLR with TTL flash control.

What camera do you have now? You might be able to just get a good housing for it and shoot great pictures ;)

I got a Canon G5 but the housing cost $575. Canon never made a housing for this camera. For that type of money, I rather get a brand new one that was made for diving.

Your better off getting a housing for the G5. Anything "made" for diving that is less than that is going to be very basic low end point and shoot, and still run you around $300 at best. Even for $600, your not getting anything that will be nearly as good as the G5 in a housing.

Thanks for the tip. I do like the way the G5 takes pictures. I've always loved that camera. I'll take your advice and get the housing instead. Any links that you can recommend?

I usually buy my camera equipment from B&H Photo. Good prices and good service. Don't have the link handy, but they pop up in the first returns from a google search ;)

since the G5 and the case have long been discontinued, you'll most likely have to search around for a used Ikelite case. I'd post up WTBs on all the popular u/w photo sites and see if anyone bites - digideep, wetpixel, underwaterphotography.com, scubaboard are all good places to try. but I wouldn't pay $400-$500 to house a G5. You can snag a new G7 and Canon housing for close to that.

After a long decision, I went ahead and bought the Canon G9 at Amazon for $450 and a housing for $180. It was better than buying a housing for a G5. Anyway, the camera has a setting for diving which was cool but my pics came out a little green. I went ahead and corrected it with Photoshop. Here are a few pics of my dive to Biscayne National Park.
