Red Anemone?

Hey guys I recently bought a new bubble tip anemone here and was classified as red bubble tip anemone. Have you seen one? Because right now it looks like a rose bubble tip anemone to me, but has anyone heard of a red before or are they the same?

Tim

I have both...sry for the cruddy cell pic.

Rose in the foreground and red behind it.

Yea...peeps have said they're the same but they're different morphs IMO. The roses typically have some green in the oral disc, as well as the base of the tentacles..then it turns to the rose color. The reds are pretty much all red..the oral disc has a touch of purple.

I will post a pic tmr! thanks tho, cuz right now the lights are off LOL. :D but as bues was saying, are they both different types or are they actually the same thing?

Like I said..same species but different color morphs..IMO. How can they be the same when they look so different? IDK lol

Most people, from my experience, use the name "rose" or "red" quite interchangeably, and do not necessarily refer to specific color morphs. I've actually never heard of someone differentiating between "rose" and "red" the way you propose. While I won't argue that there are different color morphs even of the red colored bubble tip anemone, what then is a red bubble tip with white speckles? stripes? I've had both, but only called them "red bubble tip anemone". There's already too much confusion with naming, and because of this reason I see it best to simplify.

They are both the same thing.

Indeed that there are so many morphs nowadays with so many different names, but I was just wondering if there was a specific difference between the rose and the red which jacwil has clearly defined :) Personally I've always hunted for a rose but instead was pretty lucky with a red. Will post a picture ASAP :D

I totally understand what you're stating...but if one was to look at them side by side, they would note that they aren't the "same thing."

This could be said about almost anything in a reef tank..

Ive seen donuts with hundreds of different colours, Torches with different colour tentacles and balls, acros, etc...

Cant give it a new name just because of the colour differences.... Red / Rose are pretty much bubble anemones in the 'red' colour spectrum

Typically we call them RBTA's, red or rose, and yes, there will be differences or variations in colors, just as there will be in pretty much all nems.
I see alot of vendors lately adding things like "ultra" to the name, which apparently is greek for a $100 more!LOL

Very true....agreed! However, locally we have both the reds and roses, and we tend to decipher between the two as such. I'm not trying to argue with anyone. :love1:

Thankfully these are fairly reasonably priced around here, and can be picked up for around $50 for either, from members, $80-$100 from LFS's.

So guys I got a tiny picture of my red anemone this morning so it isn't fully open yet. Well yes I know it looks like its purple or brown but seeing it in real life is much more different that seeing through a picture. The red coloration is much more focused. Sorry about the bad pic!

The original roses that came in from Tonga in the mid to late 1980's had no green on them at all. They were pretty much the same as what you are calling a red. When the ones with the green on the base of the tentacles started coming in we called them crap, because they usually turned brown in a few weeks. Yours are nice, but there is not set naming system. You pretty much have to describe them individually unless someone has one they are cloning and gives them a specific name. In addition, the appearance of the colors vary a great deal on the type of lighting and water chemistry you have in your tank.
You could have the exact same clone as someone else and it could look very different in your tank.

"Rose" has become pretty much a catch all term for any BTA that has some red, orange or pink and in some cases a certain shade of brown ;) on it.

And these days everyone thinks they're something special and pay a premium for them.
