Red Bugs on my acros. Looking for interceptor

I ahve discoverd red bugs in my large tank and after researching determined that interceptor is still the preferred in tank treatment.

As it is no longer in distrobution I am hoping that someone out there might have a tablet they are willing to part with. I actually only need a half of a tablet to allow me to do 2 treatments.

If you have any and are willing to share or if you know where i might be able to find some please let me know!

Thanks

Chirs

I believe interceptor production is on hold for one reason or another. It's been very difficult to find as of late. Keep and eye out where you buy your acropora from, as I've noticed one place in particular has been importing wild Australian colonies and chopping them up, which is typically where red bugs come from. Keep in mind, they will generally only attack the very smooth bodied type of acropora, like Caroliniana, sharshoni, validas, etc. So if possible, you can try to remove just those and treat them.

Same company that made the Excedrin that was bad makes interceptor and they recalled all drugs made by them...not sure if many places are carrying it right now...

Vet office in front of sea in the city only has small dog tabs and not enough of them. And yup i have 2 pieces of the australian acros from "that place". Im going to try the bayer flea treatment dip i have been reading about. Ive got 5 smooth skin acros all showing bugs and not happy. Fingers are crossed. Thanks for the help.

I would let the store know so they can treat their systems. Red bugs are unfortunately a common pest in this hobby and I wouldn't avoid a store just because of an issue...That is why new additions should always be dipped.

You can usually tell a quality australlian acro buy its price. If its really cheap I would imagine the wholesaler didn't take the time to two step intercept it. (once for the bugs and once again for any potential eggs that may have hatched). And I'm willing to bet more that the store didn't take the time to do this either. To my knowledge coral dips are a hit or miss on red bugs, but I could be wrong on this. Interceptor actually goes a long way if it's used to tread outside the tank, in say a 5 gallon bucket.

Lile jeff said, I would let whichever store it was know so that hopefully they can do more to prevent the spread.

Not throwing stones at any stores.... I am a big fan of most of the Orlando retailers. They are trying to make a living and supply us with what we are after.

I have made a call to give a heads up but with all of the wild colonies coming and going I wont fault them for being contaminated. Especially with the reasonable prices as mentioned by gp2.

Ill give an update after i try the Bayer Advanced dip. Scary stuff but those redbugs are doing some damage. I have some unhappy Acros. I didnt recognize what was happening until it became an infestation. :(

So much to learn in this hobby. (gross understatement)..love that quote

Bayer treatment works great. Just make sure you rinse it really good. If a little of it is left, especially if coral is attached to rock, will leach into your DT. It will stun any crabs and shrimps.

I just ordered Interceptor from megapets

They are an online retailer out of Australia. Took about a week, but no other issues. Tank is treated and bugs appear to be gone. I'm doing a second treatment next weekend.

I got the "chewables" and they worked the same as the tablets. I think I clicked on the wrong item when I ordered. No matter, the large dog chewables and tablets both have 23mg of the drug.

Bayer Advantage concentrate for turf and lawns (from Lowes)

10ml in one cup of tank water. 5 minute dip, swirling the water lightly. I treated 3 "test subjects"

RUSULTS:

RED BUGS DEAD!!!!! there were a few left on the test corals after rinsing twice and letting set in a bowl of tank water for a few minutes but they were gone in about an hour after puttin pieces back in my tank. Hopefuly dead and fell off!

I had polyp extension on one of the acros about 2 hours after the dip! Havent seen polyps on that frag for over a week.

Im a believer and will treat the rest of my acros this week. Going to continue to treat all of the acros this way (same time and dose) until i stop seeing this nasty critters. Hopefully i can eradicate them this way without having to dose entire tank with other stuff.

I also noticed a flatorm fall off of one of the test pieces! This stuff works, and its cheap. Ill be using it along with revive for all new acros in the future.

Be prepared to treat your system...it is safe with intercepter. Pull your inverts for 24-48hrs after treatment. safe with anemones, clams, snails and cucumbers.. I recommend 4 treatments not 2. 1 wk apart to be sure then you won't see them again...there is also a bug that kills LPS and this will treat that as well.

good luck!

quick update...

Still redbug free! I have only done the Bayer treatment and not done a tank treatment. I did loose one piece of smooth skin deepwater acro (carolinia?) but it was struggling from the red bugs. Not sure if they got it or the treatment.

If there are any left in my tank they have yet to re-appear. Im watching closely and plan to dip any piece that has cooties.

we shall see!
