Red Bugs

Fireworm

Anyone have any experience with these little guys? I was cleaning my tank today, and after the water cleared up, I noticed that I had some stuff moving on 2 or 3 of my acros. They are small and red, but from the pics that I have seen, they are more worm shaped than red dots like I have seen here on RC. I am going to ttry to get a few pics when I get home tonight, or in the morning and post them.

If they are infact red bugs, from what I understand, they only go after certain acros. They will not harm anyother corals. Also as I understand it, the treatment is interceptor, which is flea med. for dogs. Supposed to be a good treatment, lots of water changes and lots of carbon. With this treatment, I will have to get rid of my shrimps, snails, and crabs. If that is the case, I can only house so many in my nano's. It is possible that I will have some up for the taking.

Well, after taking a second glance, that is what I have for sure. RED BUGS.

I am going to start taking out my CUC today, putting what I can in my daughters tank. I am waiting on a answer if it is safe to give away the rest.

Also checking to see if my clams will be safe. Have not heard about them one way or another.

I have some interceptor you're welcome to use for treatment. I paid $10/tablet from a local vet. I think one tablet can treat up to 500 gallons.

Rob,
Have you faced this battle before? how many of the tablets do you have? I was looking on here last night, and the threads I found were talking about doing several treatments, with big water changes and lots of carbon.

Sorry to hear about the red bugs Phil. :(

I dip all incoming corals with interceptor to try and eliminate the chance that they make it to my display tank.

Look on the bright side, out of the three sps evils you got the easiest one to treat for.

I think I am going to setup a seperate system for a few days to get rid of the little bastards. I will start that on Sunday after the meeting and get that going. That beats killing all my CUC, and possibly my clams. I will start doing the dips from now on. It is one of those things that is not if it happens wbut when it happens.

I heard they are easy, and if you remove the coral for more than 4 days from the main display, that they will starve and die

After looking at my tank a little bit ago, I will have to start this stuff tomorrow. I have a 20g tall or a 15g coming to me, I have extra heaters. I will use my skilter just for flow in the tank, with a carbon sack in it. I have 1 MJ 600 to put in there, and will probably have to put another in there for more flow.

I think if I wait till Sunday, that I will have lost a few frags by then. I have a couple looking a little sad now.

By the way, does anyone was a good deal on acros at the meeting.....LOL

ouch that sucks.....good luck nuking the suckers. If you need anything let me know

Thanks Lorna. It really doesn't sound like it is going to be that hard. It is times like this I am thankful that we have a network of people in the club willing to help some one out. Makes the hobby better if you know you have the support from someone else locally.

I got my QT tank up and going today. I want to say thanks to Matt V. for letting me use one of his many tanks and to Nate for letting me use his extra Viper light.

I am using a 20t, I have my MJ600, Koralia 2, and my skilter running. I dosed the first pill at about 4:30. The forums suggest at least 6 hours of the med in the tank. Kirby up at Prusses told me he does at least 12 hours. It is going to be at least 15 hours before I can get back to it and do another water change. I tried to take pics of the little bugs, but my camera doesn't have a macro that will get that small of a focus.

I could not see any red bugs on my acros last night after the meeting. I did a 10g water change in the 20g that they are in, and mounted a MH on there for them.

I will dose once more tonight or tomorrow, followed by at least 2 or 3 more water changes. I would like to try to have the corals back in my display before the new year.

Also, I did notice that I had 2 snails that were attached to one of the rocks, and was told by several that the interceptor would kill the snails. They look fine to me, lets see if they can take round 2.

I checked on the acros again today. For the most part they llok ok. No bugs, but I am seeing some tissue lost. I am going to do my last dose in the morning when I get home, and do the water change in the afternoon before I go to work. I plan on putting the corals back in the dispaly by Friday or Saturday

I I am putting the corals back into my tank tonight when the kids go to bed. All the bugs should be dead in the display by now, and I am starting to get RTN on 2 of my favorite acros.

If I had to do it all over again, I woul have just treated the display, and said screw the CUC. I can replace all of them for the price of 1 acro colony. I hope I can save them, I should e able to frag out the live stuff worse case.

I will update later to see how it all goes.

I put the acros all back in the display. I had to chop my 2 favorite acros. I just hope that will save them. What was once a 4" acro with a 4" or 5" encrusting on the rock, is now 2 little branches and a little nub.

Moment of silence...........

Lights just came on, and I lost my 2 fav. acros, lucly I just fragged them out about a month ago to Ron up in Coldwater, hopefully I can get a frag back at some point in time.

Also lost my crayola acro frag.
