Hi i recently purchased a marine tank it had been cycling for 6 months prior (i only got it last thursday) and i have red spots on my sand and red stuff on my live rock i think its algea but dont really know any help would be greatly appreciated i have tried to upload photos of it but it keeps saying upload failed

It is probably cyanbacteria. It is very common during the early months of a new tank. Do you have any photots? That would help.

If it is cyanbacteria you can do a 3 day lights out period, and that should help. You could also try Chemiclean, but some say it doesnt work, and is just adding a chemical to your tank. I have used it in the past, and it worked fine for me. Just have to make sure you keep the water airarated. I just took the collection cup off my skimmer, and let it overflow to achive the ariation.

Hope that helps

Really do need a picture to be sure. Take a turkey baster and spray it. If it comes right off then 90% sure its cyanobacteria. 3 days lights out or chemiclean are bandaids. Since it was recently moved it could be caused by a mini-cycle and may go away with time as it is generally caused by a nutrient problem. Other solution is to increase flow as cyano likes dead spots.
